Breakthrough in next-generation energy-saving computer research: Faster spin waves give birth to new magnon computers
2023-08-21
Scientists around the world are striving to find alternative solutions to current electronic computing technology, and a new way of information transmission is emerging in the field of magnetism: waves generated in magnetic media can replace electron exchange for transmission, but so far, the computational speed is still too slow. Scientists at the University of Vienna in Austria have discovered a new method that can make spin waves shorter and faster. This discovery is an important step towards magnon calculation, and the research results are published in the latest issue of "Scientific Progress". Magneto nics is a relatively new research field. The local disturbances in the magnetic sequence of a magnet can propagate as waves in the material, which are called spin waves, and the related quasi particles are called magnetons. They carry information in the form of angular momentum pulses. Due to this characteristic, they can be used as low-power data carriers in future smaller and more energy-efficient computers. The main challenge of magnetonics is wavelength - the larger the wavelength, the slower the data processing unit based on magnetons. So far, wavelength reduction can only be achieved through very complex hybrid structures or synchrotrons. The research team found this time that as the intensity increases, the spin wave becomes shorter and faster, which is a breakthrough method in magnon calculations. They metaphorically say that changing the wavelength of light changes its color, but changing the intensity changes its luminosity. In view of this, the team excited shorter and better spin waves by changing the intensity of the spin waves. The current excitation wavelength of the system is about 200 nanometers. According to numerical simulations, shorter wavelengths can also be excited. It is worth mentioning that the new system exhibits a "self locking nonlinear displacement", which means that the amplitude of the excited spin wave is constant, which is closely related to integrated circuits because it allows different magnetic components to work together at the same amplitude, which is crucial for humans to build more complex systems and implement magnon based computers. Editor in Chief Circle: The energy consumption issue of electronic terminals is like an elephant in a room, which is obvious: the energy consumption of data centers greatly increases their operating costs and poses challenges to energy supply; Mobile phones and computers consume too much energy, causing us to suffer from 'battery life anxiety' in our daily lives. Developing more energy-efficient electronic terminals is imperative, and this cannot be separated from a key issue - chip energy consumption. Currently, scientists are seeking solutions from various sources, including developing two-dimensional material chips, brain like chips, and so on. The development of magnetic integrated circuits using magnetic principles provides a new approach to solving the energy consumption problem of electronic terminals. (New News Agency)
