2023-08-10

Changsha, August 8th (Xinhua News Agency) - During hot weather, some people have developed rhabdomyolysis due to excessive and unscientific exercise. The reporter learned from some medical institutions in Hunan that recently, hospitals have treated multiple patients with rhabdomyolysis due to improper exercise. Doctors remind that exercise and fitness should be carried out step by step on hot days to avoid accidental injuries caused by excessive and intense exercise. Deng Hong, Deputy Chief Physician of the Nephrology Department at Changsha Central Hospital, introduced that rhabdomyolysis refers to a series of acquired diseases that affect the membrane, membrane channels, and energy supply of rhabdomyocytes. Some people, after long-term inactivity, suddenly engage in vigorous exercise, which can easily lead to muscle cell necrosis, cell membrane rupture, and release a large amount of potassium ions and myoglobin into the blood, causing arrhythmia. Deng Hong reminds that it is worth noting that the number of young people diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis in hospitals is increasing. Patients with rhabdomyolysis may experience symptoms such as muscle pain, fatigue, swelling, fever, oliguria, and in severe cases, severe complications such as acute kidney failure, hyperkalemia, and multiple organ dysfunction. Li Huijing, a nephrologist at Hunan Aerospace Hospital, reminds sports enthusiasts to exercise in hot weather step by step and to replenish water, inorganic salts, etc. in a timely manner. Sports enthusiasts should adjust their physical condition, engage in adaptive training and warm-up exercises before activities. Middle aged and elderly people and patients with cardiovascular diseases should avoid prolonged and high-intensity exercise in high temperature and humid environments. Once symptoms such as muscle soreness, fatigue, darkened urine color, headache, nausea, vomiting, and fever occur after exercise, one should be vigilant for rhabdomyolysis and seek medical attention in a timely manner to avoid delaying treatment.
