Shanghai experts successfully replanted severed palm and rescued severely injured individuals who were hit by machine hinges

On July 31, a seriously injured man from Wenling, Zhejiang Province, who was hit by a machine and broke his palm, successfully underwent replantation in Shanghai, and the blood supply was reconstructed successfully. It is reported that Mr. Yang (pseudonym), a worker, was accidentally hit by a machine while working in the factory, resulting in incomplete detachment of his left palm, with only the radial and ulnar edges connected to some tissue. The initial diagnosis at the local hospital is "left hand compression and detachment injury". The injury is complex, and after simple dressing, the doctor informed the patient's family that they must be transferred to a hospital with conditions for replantation surgery within 8 hours. Professor Chen Aimin, from the Fourth People's Hospital of Shanghai, affiliated to Tongji University (hereinafter referred to as the Fourth People's Hospital of Shanghai), told reporters: "Replantation of amputated palm is a more complicated and difficult replantation operation in microsurgery. After amputation, it is often not a simple end-to-end anastomosis, especially when the middle part of the palm is severed, and both the deep and shallow palmar arches are damaged, which requires doctors' consummate skills and meticulous attitude." According to Chen Aimin, Crushing amputation injury is the most serious type of limb injury. To achieve successful replantation surgery and good postoperative recovery of limb function, good microsurgical techniques and comprehensive concepts are required. After 6 hours of rapid transportation, Mr. Yang was sent to Shanghai Fourth People's Hospital. The trauma orthopedic team led by Professor Chen Aimin began a race against time "amputation defense battle". The hand and foot microscopy team has developed a detailed and feasible surgical plan. At the same time, the Shanghai Fourth Hospital Trauma Center immediately opened a green channel. At 2:00 am the day after his injury, Mr. Yang underwent a difficult surgery. After the surgery, Mr. Yang was transferred back to the orthopedic ward. After a week of observation, with the full treatment and meticulous care of all medical staff in the trauma orthopedics department, the blood supply of the severed palm of the injured person remained good, and the wound healing was satisfactory. The doctor confirmed that the replantation of the severed palm was successful. It is understood that in 1960, Professor Tu Kaiyuan, a Chinese medical educator and one of the founders of modern trauma surgery, began research on amputated limb replantation and took the lead in completing the amputated limb replantation surgery for dogs, laying a solid animal experimental foundation for China's first successful case of amputated forearm limb replantation in 1963. Professor Chen Aimin is a disciple of Professor Tu Kaiyuan. He inherited the concept of Tu's fracture and trauma treatment and micro replantation technology, and completed the replantation of severed fingers under field conditions in the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. The relevant research results have been widely recognized by peers both domestically and internationally, and have been published in the internationally renowned trauma journal Trauma.
