2023-07-31
Badya Shokat, economic adviser of Pakistan Institute of Sustainable Development Policy, said in an exclusive interview in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, that the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor is a model of sustainable development model, which brings infrastructure, economic and trade development and employment opportunities to Pakistan. According to the data provided by the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, by the end of 2022, the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor has brought a cumulative direct investment of US $25.4 billion to Pakistan, created 236000 jobs, and helped Pakistan add 510 kilometers of highways, 8000 megawatts of electricity and 886 kilometers of national core power transmission grid. Shokat believes that as an important pilot project for the joint construction of the "the Belt and Road", the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor is a sustainable development model. In the past 10 years, the corridor has been progressing smoothly and operating efficiently, which is crucial for the development of Pakistan's economy. Shaokat stated that the transportation infrastructure such as roads, ports, and airports constructed by the corridor in Pakistan has promoted connectivity within and between the country and the region. The corridor has built clean coal-fired and various renewable energy power stations, and also built High-voltage direct current projects to meet the needs of residents and industries, reduce the production costs of enterprises, feed the development of local manufacturing industry, and boost the overall export level. He said that the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor has created a large number of high-quality employment opportunities in Pakistan, promoted the integration and development of different regions, trained highly skilled labor force and experienced engineers for the local people, and cultivated a population wealth for Pakistan's economic development. Shokat believes that the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor is an important source of confidence for Pakistan when facing various external challenges. Chinese enterprises have always strengthened cooperation with Pakistani enterprises, sharing advanced technological knowledge with the Pakistani side within the framework of the corridor, and promoting technological progress and growth in the Pakistani business community. "In the future, Pakistan will have a strong and efficient infrastructure system supported by the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor, a prosperous market and a thriving manufacturing industry," he said. Shaokate also stated that Chinese enterprises under the corridor project attach great importance to fulfilling corporate social responsibility. When Pakistan is facing natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods, Chinese enterprises always actively help Pakistan in disaster relief, providing food, medical supplies and other relief materials to the affected people, so that the Pakistani people can fully feel the "iron" friendship between Pakistan and China.
