2023-07-27
Reporter Yao Yaqi learned from the National Forestry and Grassland Administration that China's first high-level forum on international mangrove protection opened in Shenzhen on the 26th. This forum is an important action to implement the outcome of the 14th Conference of the Parties to the Ramsar Convention held in November last year, and also an important measure to implement the spirit of the National Conference on Ecological and Environmental Protection. It aims to further consolidate global consensus, jointly promote mangrove protection, and show the world China's willingness to act. A total of 160 representatives from 29 countries, the secretariat of the Ramsar Convention, FAO and other relevant international organizations were invited to attend the forum. During the forum, multiple activities such as ministerial round tables, plenary meetings, and exhibitions of mangrove scenery pictures from various countries were held, resulting in a series of valuable and meaningful work achievements, making positive contributions to further promoting the healthy development of global mangrove conservation. The "Joint Statement" adopted at the ministerial round table advocates for governments to incorporate mangrove protection and sustainable utilization into national plans, in order to fully leverage their ecological, economic, and social benefits; We will jointly explore sustainable financing mechanisms and collaborate in areas such as knowledge sharing, scientific research, technology exchange and training, and pilot projects. During the forum, a special fund for international mangrove protection was also established, which is mainly used to fund and support international cooperation, scientific research, ecological restoration and other projects in mangrove Conservation International. The Chinese government attaches great importance to the protection of mangroves and has taken active and effective measures to promote the protection of mangroves into a stage of high-quality development. The area of mangroves has increased by over 7200 hectares compared to the beginning of this century, completely reversing the trend of area reduction and becoming one of the few countries in the world with a net increase in mangrove area.
