China's First Flexible Solar Wing Communication Satellite Successfully Launched

2023-07-25

At 10:50 on July 23, China's first flexible solar wing communication satellite, Galaxy Aerospace Lingxi 03, was successfully launched at Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center with the Long March 2D. The satellite successfully entered the predetermined orbit and the launch mission was a complete success. This satellite is independently developed by Galaxy Aerospace Company and is used to verify next-generation low orbit broadband satellite communication, as well as technologies such as ultra large energy, active thermal control, industrial integrated forming structure, and multi satellite stacking and compression release. This is the first time in orbit in China to verify the multi satellite stacked launch technology, which will provide technical support for the rapid deployment of giant low orbit communication constellations in the future. The flexible solar wing used by this satellite has a single layer thickness of only about 1 millimeter, which can be folded like ancient memorials. When the solar wing is folded, the thickness of the main body is only less than 5 centimeters; When the satellite is in orbit, the solar wing is pulled apart, with a length of about 9 meters and a width exceeding 2.5 meters. Flexible solar wings can absorb more solar energy and are suitable for large-scale stacked satellite launches, which is of great significance for accelerating the construction of satellite internet. The configuration of Galaxy Aerospace Lingxi 03 Star is like the chassis of a car, and it is also the first satellite in China to adopt integrated molding technology for its main structure, making it easier for subsequent mass production. The satellite does not have a "shell" package, and the standalone equipment is directly exposed to the space environment. Therefore, it is equipped with an active thermal control fluid circuit, similar to the satellite's "air conditioning", which allows it to work at a comfortable temperature. Zhu Zhengxian, Chief Technology Officer of Galaxy Aerospace, stated that in the future, it will accelerate the mass development of stackable flat panel satellites, and accelerate the research and development of core technologies such as phased array antennas, onboard large energy, and digital processing payloads for mobile direct connected satellites.
