2023-07-18
On the morning of July 18, Premier Li Qiang met with US President's Special Envoy for Climate Change John Kerry in the Great Hall of the People. Li Qiang stated that China and the United States are both important countries in the world, and strengthening cooperation between the two countries not only benefits each other, but also benefits the whole world. Both China and the United States should take practical actions to implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state, properly manage differences, and promote the early return of China US relations to the track of healthy and stable development. Li Qiang pointed out that the current global task of addressing climate change is arduous, and it is necessary for countries including China and the United States to strengthen coordination, gather consensus, and seize action, in order to maximize the joint efforts in addressing climate change. We should practice multilateralism and adhere to the goals and principles set out in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Paris Agreement. We should assume our respective responsibilities and adhere to the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities. Developed countries should take the lead in reducing emissions and fulfill their financial commitments as soon as possible. Developing countries should make contributions within their capabilities. To share technological achievements and promote global green and low-carbon transformation, developed countries should provide more technical support to developing countries. It is hoped that China and the United States will continue to uphold the spirit of cooperation, respect each other's core concerns, seek common ground while reserving differences through full communication, explore more pragmatic institutional cooperation, promote the process of multilateral climate governance, and ensure the full and effective implementation of the Paris Agreement. Kerry stated that the United States and China are the world's top two economies and the top two carbon emitters. The US side hopes that the US China relationship will remain stable, and is willing to strengthen cooperation with China to jointly address urgent global challenges such as climate change and promote the success of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
