The former "Mosquito River" has transformed into an ecological "leisure corridor"

In midsummer, heatwaves billow. The Xinfeng River in the southern part of Beijing flows with clear water, adorned with purple chimneys on both sides, and the crisp chirping of cicadas is heard endlessly. However, this river once lost its true name, and nearby residents called it "Stinky Gully" and "Mosquito River". In the 1980s, with the acceleration of economic and social development, a large amount of industrial wastewater and domestic sewage quickly became unbearable to the Xinfeng River. The river dried up and turned black, becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes. "When you come to the neighborhood, you can pass quickly with your nose covered." Shi Siming, who grew up near the Xinfeng River Tuan, recalled that he did not have the pleasure of playing in the water in his childhood memory, but only remembered that the mud in the river was silted up. Especially in summer, the stink sent out surrounded the surrounding houses, and the windows had to be closed tightly. "At that time, no one thought it was a river, and it completely did not conform to people's imagination of the river." Xinfeng River runs through Daxing District, Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, Tongzhou District and other places from west to east. With a total drainage area of 166.4 square kilometers, it is an important flood control and drainage channel in the capital. In 2017, Beijing launched the comprehensive management project of Xinfeng River basin in Daxing District, and the river gradually began to transform. The comprehensive rectification of black and odor pollution sources has begun. 54 kilometers of river dredging, 24 kilometers of new sewage pipeline network, and 3 sewage stations have been constructed for the governance project, completing internal reduction and external pollution control; At the key node where the branch flows into the main stream, two Constructed wetland water quality purification facilities will be built according to local conditions, two new primary rain storage ponds will be built, 116.89 hectares of plant buffer zone will be repaired, and non-point source pollution will be treated. The river is unobstructed, waiting for the water source. Niu Yina, a senior engineer at Beijing Beikong Xingfeng Water Environment Management Co., Ltd., said that the main supply of river water is recycled water. We have built three new recycled water pump stations to treat the domestic sewage in the area and replenish it to the main and tributary rivers of the Xinfeng River. The daily replenishment amount is now 127000 cubic meters, ensuring the ecological flow of the river and improving the hydrodynamic power of the river. Walking eastward along the river bank, there are no fences on the trail, allowing people to get close to the water, and the scenery of fish flying on the shallow bottom and uneven water and grass is panoramic. At the same time, water management is still progressing rapidly and steadily. Traveling to the riverside park in the middle of the river, the reporter saw three staff members wearing waterproof suits, salvaging floating aquatic plants in the river. Nowadays, the Xinfeng River Basin has also introduced a smart water management platform to monitor real-time changes in water volume and quality. After nearly 6 years of treatment and operation maintenance, the environment of the Xinfeng River has been upgraded from poor Class V before treatment to Class IV water that can be used for landscaping. After water ecological restoration, there are 31 kinds of Aquatic plant in the basin, including 11 kinds of natural plants. The water is clear and the banks are green, and the Xinfeng River has taken off its hat as the "Mosquito River". Not only that, but after refined management, Beijing's Sanli River, Liangma River, and other rivers have regained their radiance, transforming into "leisure corridors" where businesses gather and visitors check in. Feng Kai, a fourth level researcher at the Water Ecological Environment Department of the Beijing Ecological Environment Bureau, introduced that the quality of the water ecological environment in Beijing continues to improve. In 2022, the river length with excellent water quality in Beijing accounted for 77.9% of the total monitored length, an increase of 28.1 percentage points compared to 2013. In recent years, Beijing has increased its ecological and environmental construction in all aspects, not only in terms of water
