Construction of the "Three Gorges Project in Equatorial Guinea" by Chinese enterprises to assist local economic and social development

In a small restaurant in the Ngolo neighborhood of northern Bata, Equatorial Guinea, 49-year-old owner Constance Ondo took out a bottle of chilled beer from the refrigerator and brought it to the table of a couple enjoying grilled beef. A stable power supply and normal use of the refrigerator were extravagant expectations for Wengduo several years ago. Now, this has become the most ordinary scenario in her business. Weng Duo recently stated in an interview with reporters that the Jibulo Hydropower Station, built by Chinese enterprises, brings abundant electricity to the local people, and she is also one of the many beneficiaries of the Jibulo Hydropower Station. It is estimated that before the completion of the Jibulo Hydropower Station, about 80% of the population in the Equatorial Guinea mainland region had been plagued by power shortages. Bata is the largest city in the mainland region. For a long time, its electricity mainly relies on a heavy oil power plant with an installed capacity of 24 megawatts and a small hydropower station with an installed capacity of 3.2 megawatts. Most streets in the city have no public lighting, and there is no municipal power supply in large areas. Many households need to provide their own generators. Previously, due to frequent power outages, the refrigerator was difficult to use properly, and Weng Duo often worried about the inability of the liquor to be chilled. In order not to disappoint customers, we used to need to go to an ice factory to buy ice, but the ice melts easily and the freezing effect is not good, "she said. In 2011, all 4 units of Jibuluo Hydropower Station built by Sinohydro International Engineering Co., Ltd. were put into operation. With four Francis turbine generator units with a total installed capacity of 120 megawatts, this hydropower station has become the largest hydropower station in the mainland region and is known as the "Three Gorges Project in Equatorial Guinea". According to Sinohydro, 90% of the power consumption in mainland China is currently supplied by Jibuluo Hydropower Station. In the 12 years since the hydropower station was put into operation, it has generated approximately 4.5 billion kilowatt hours of electricity. According to the local electricity price level, it is equivalent to creating more than four times the direct economic benefits of the total investment of the power station. Nowadays, for Weng Duo, buying ice has long been a thing of the past. Stable and sufficient power supply allows her to take out chilled beer from the refrigerator at any time to entertain customers; With continuous lighting, the restaurant's closing hours have been extended from 8pm to midnight. Business is quite good, "Ondo told reporters. According to Sinohydro, during the construction of Jibuluo Hydropower Station, about 410 local employees were employed during the peak period, which trained a large number of technical talents for Equatorial Guinea; At the same time, in order to achieve technology transfer, 50 local staff members were also selected to go to China for technical training. 35 year old Fei Ming is among them. After studying in China for 5 years, he can not only speak fluent Chinese, but also master knowledge related to hydropower stations. Now, he works as a technical engineer at hydropower stations, responsible for operation and maintenance. "After working here, I bought a house and two cars in the capital Malabo and Bata," Fermin said. 33-year-old Oscar Eineme also went to China for training. After working in power plants for 11 years, he is now an intermediate technician responsible for monitoring system operation, data collection, and equipment inspection. He feels that he can learn new things every day at work and hopes to continue to improve and become a unique senior technician. The operation of Jibulo Hydropower Station has ended the era of widespread use of diesel engines for power generation in mainland Equatorial Guinea, and helped the Equatorial Guinea government achieve the development plan of 'household electricity',
