Yuan Longping in the eyes of African agricultural technology experts: He made me believe that "where there is a will, there is a way"

For Longbo Azalama, an agricultural technology expert from the Ministry of Agriculture of Madagascar, the highlight of life comes from two encounters with Yuan Longping, the father of Hybrid rice. The indissoluble bond with Yuan Lao and Hybrid rice technology brought him "the courage to believe in dreams". In order to achieve food self-sufficiency, Madagascar has started technical cooperation with China on Hybrid rice since 2007. Technicians of the two countries are working together to research and promote Hybrid rice in Mayiqi Town near Antananarivo, the capital of Malaysia. Longbo Asalama said frankly that he was skeptical when he first heard about the benefits of Hybrid rice, until 2016 when he was sent to Mayiqi Town to investigate the yield of Hybrid rice. "I used several measurement methods and inspection methods, and found that the yield of Hybrid rice per hectare was 9 to 10 tons, about three times the yield of conventional rice in the region." Since then, Longbo Asalama has been completely convinced of China's Hybrid rice technology, not only consulting technical experts in Madagascar, but also going to China to participate in training and exchanges. In 2017, he attended a Hybrid rice seminar held in Changsha, China, and met Yuan Longping for the first time at the opening ceremony. "Professor Yuan Longping spoke to encourage us." Longbo Asalama recalled that the first impression he left on him was "simple, rigorous and concise". In 2018, Longbo Asalama returned to Hunan for training and met Professor Yuan Longping again in an activity. He said that at that time, participants from all over the world asked Professor Yuan Longping to take a group photo as a memento, and he hurried to ask for a group photo and introduce himself to Old Yuan. He was very excited when he heard the response of Old Yuan: "I know Madagascar, which is a beautiful country, where we have been conducting research on Hybrid rice since 2007". "At that time, I was really excited and encouraged. I said to myself that I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Yuan Longping, which meant that I had a place in the world's efforts to promote Hybrid rice." After returning to Madagascar with confidence, Longbo Azalama shared the knowledge and skills acquired in China with local rice growers in Africa. "Our yield has never been worse. Even though we rarely use chemical fertilizers, our Hybrid rice yield is still more than twice the average yield of local traditional rice." In the view of Longbo Asalama, learning Hybrid rice technology from Chinese experts, including Professor Yuan Longping, has had a positive and huge impact on his career and personal life. "In my career, it (Hybrid rice technology) gave me great confidence and gave me the opportunity and courage to propose the 'five-year strategy' for promoting Hybrid rice to the Ministry of Agriculture. It also gave me and my family the courage to believe in dreams and encouraged me to work hard for dreams," he said: "Professor Yuan Longping has left a lot of wealth to the world, not only for the Chinese people, but for all people, all people who believe that 'where there is a will, there is a way'."
