Cracking down on counterfeits cannot rely solely on providing consumers with "insight"

2023-07-05

The "Insight Program" of China Consumers Association provides consumers with free true and false identification services, so that consumers will no longer fight alone in protecting their rights. However, in the long run, lending consumers a pair of "smart eyes" is not enough, and regulatory authorities need to crack down on consumers' counterfeiting. Relevant platforms should also take on the main responsibility and implement effective monitoring and supervision. Recently, the China Consumers Association announced to expand the scope of implementation of the "Insight Program" to provide consumers with true and false identification services for free. Consumers are no longer fighting alone in their rights protection. Behind them stands the China Consumers Association, which is supported by consumer rights protection laws and professional institutions. Law and profession are the biggest assets of the "Vision Plan". However, from the user experience, if these "smart eyes" want to be refined into eye-catching eyes and deter unscrupulous merchants, they still need to be further refined. In the process of identifying institutions, identification itself is a challenge in the field of consumption. As for cosmetics, there are differences in versions and batches sold in different countries, which poses a significant challenge to the platform's identification ability. For example, one of the first e-commerce platforms to join the "Insight Program" testing agency has its own identification team, and its identification ability is highly recognized in the industry. But this time, its open "smart eye" authentication service is only an online authentication service for individual appraisers, rather than the platform's official offline authentication service. This objectively leads to a problem: the platform is both a referee and an athlete, and also needs to send substitute "players" to serve as referees for competing opponents. Randomly asked several mainstream e-commerce platforms, and most platforms and merchants expressed that they do not recognize third-party authentication such as certain e-commerce platforms. What role can consumers play in obtaining identification books through the "Insight Program"? This is a test of the credibility of the Consumer Association in China. On the consumer side, the current "smart eye" identification service mainly involves high-value goods such as shoes, cosmetics, watches, bags, etc. with serious counterfeiting situations. Identification requires consumers to upload photos of necessary parts of the goods (such as trademarks, nameplates, zippers, etc.). The author's experience has found that there are significant differences in photos taken from different angles and lighting, and the accuracy of identification results is also a problem. Due to the limitations of online identification, the China Consumers Association emphasizes that the current identification conclusions are only for consumption reference. If consumers want to protect their rights in the future, they still need to go through procedures and carry out stricter identification conditions. But with the three words' China Consumers Association ', there is a high probability that platform owners and merchants will attach importance to consumer rights protection demands, which is a welcome progress. If there were more credible testing institutions to join the "Insight Program", the effect might be better. In the long run, lending consumers a pair of "smart eyes" is not enough, and regulatory authorities need to crack down on consumers' counterfeiting. For example, on the identification demand page of an e-commerce platform, it shows that more than 400 million pieces (times) have been identified, ranging from shoes and bags, cosmetics to Pet food. The fundamental reason for such an astonishing demand for identification is that the counterfeit industry chain cannot be completely burned, and consumers are not confident in buying. Recently, a media investigation found that empty bottles of over 3000 yuan worth of cosmetics can sell for 300 yuan, indicating that the counterfeiting team is also "upgrading" at all costs. With the rapid development of cross-border e-commerce and market procurement trade, infringing and counterfeit goods are entering new industries
