Launch of China's high-level public health talent training project

On July 3, the kick-off meeting of the public health high-level talent project and the opening ceremony of the first course training, sponsored by the Chinese Preventive healthcare Association and co organized by the Center for Public Health and Major Epidemic Prevention and Control Strategy of Peking University, was held in Beijing. More than 140 leaders, experts and scholars from units such as the National Health Commission, the National Bureau for Disease Control and Prevention, the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and higher education institutions, as well as the first batch of students from national and provincial centers for disease control and prevention, participated in the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Feng Zijian, Vice President and Secretary General of the Chinese Association of Preventive healthcare. The relevant person in charge of the National Health Commission stated that talent cultivation is a key link in improving public health service capabilities. Talent cultivation should be placed in a more prominent position to cultivate a group of leading military personnel and young elites with strong professional skills, strategic thinking, and international perspectives for national and local disease control institutions. Professor Li Liming, Director of the Research Center for Public Health and Major Epidemic Prevention and Control Strategy at Peking University, introduced the project's training objectives, teaching philosophy, and curriculum design. He pointed out that the Chinese Preventive healthcare Association will give full play to the comprehensive advantages of science and technology associations, with the goal of cultivating backbone public health professionals with both leadership and executive power, pay attention to the 4P values of professional, forward-looking, practical and problem solving, and explore the training mechanism and mode of high-level applied talents that meet the needs of Chinese path to modernization. Li Liming, Chairman of the Teaching Committee of the Public Health High Level Talent Training Project, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony to fully implement the strategic deployment of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China on "promoting the construction of a healthy China, improving the public health system, strengthening the construction of major epidemic prevention, control and treatment systems, and emergency response capabilities", The Public Health High Level Talent Training Project (referred to as the Public Health Talent Project) aims to cultivate a group of professionals with strong professional skills, strategic thinking, and international perspectives for national and provincial-level disease control institutions and university public health colleges through the implementation of the Leading Talents Leadership Enhancement Project (referred to as the Leading Talents Project) and the Advanced Training Program for Public Health Young Elites (referred to as the Young Elites Project) Leading talents and core technical backbone of public health who can solve practical problems in public health and have excellent leadership. From 2023 to 2026, the Public Health Talent Program will carry out three phases of the Leading Talent Program (35 members per phase) and the Youth Elite Program (30 members per phase). Each study lasts for one year, and the training methods include centralized course teaching, institutional visits/training, ministerial reports, online hot topic lectures and discussions, and thematic research. After unit recommendation, qualification review, online interviews, and expert review, the first phase of the 36 leading talent program students and 30 young elite program students respectively came from national, provincial, and the first batch of high-level public health colleges and universities.
