Chinese Scientists Explore the Micro World "Green Giant"

2023-07-04

The movie "The Hulk" assumes that after being subjected to strong radiation, a person triggers mysterious forces in their body to become a "Hulk" with superpowers. This kind of thing that is difficult to achieve in reality can be achieved in solids by constructing exquisite materials. How to manipulate the exciton "Green Giant" and complete experimental observations is one of the goals that physicists pay attention to and explore. On June 30th, a research result titled "Experimental Discovery of Rydberg Morse Excitons" was published in the international academic journal "Science". Xu Yang's team and collaborators in the Laboratory of Nanophysics and Devices, Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, completed the first experimental observation of the Rydberg Moore exciton. According to the popular science of the research team, atoms are the basic microscopic particles that make up matter. The electrons of atoms have the characteristic of layered arrangement. When electrons are excited to the outermost orbit, the formed atoms are called Rydberg atoms. This excited atom is vividly referred to as the giant of the atomic world due to its larger size. In semiconductor materials, the particles composed of positive and negative charges attracting each other are called excitons. Correspondingly, the Excited state of excitons is called the Rydberg exciton, which is also the giant of exciton world. Just like the "Green Giant" in the movie, the excitons in the Rydberg state have many interesting characteristics, such as being able to move freely in semiconductors, being able to produce significant responses to changes in the surrounding environment, and so on. In the past few years, Xu Yang, a specially appointed researcher and collaborator of the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences/Key Laboratory of Nanophysics and Devices of the National Research Center for Condensed Matter Physics in Beijing, has developed a set of optical "Rydberg exciton detection" methods, that is, using the characteristics of the Rydberg exciton state of the two-dimensional semiconductor Tungsten diselenide that is sensitive to the dielectric shielding of the surrounding environment, to achieve effective detection of novel electronic states in the adjacent two-dimensional system. However, in the system using this method, the interlayer interaction between the Rydberg exciton state and the surrounding dielectric layer is weak. How to regulate the Rydberg exciton to form a strong coupling state and achieve spatial confinement has become an urgent problem to be solved. The research team stated that just as Rydberg atoms can have strong interactions and sensitivity to external fields, the optical levitation arrays they form can be used for quantum simulations and calculations. Experiments on Rydberg Mohr exciton states have shown that the system exhibits controllable regulation and spatial binding of Rydberg excitons, It can provide a potential approach for the application of Rydberg states in solid-state systems in quantum science and technology.
