The United Nations Calls for a New Era of Social Media Integrity
2023-06-14
On the 12th, the Secretary General of the United Nations Guterres released the "Information Integrity Policy Briefing on Digital Platforms" at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, urging the international community to guard against the proliferation of hate speech, errors and false information on social media, pay attention to the potential harm caused by the rapid development of generative artificial intelligence, and work together to create a new era of social media integrity. Guterres said at the press conference on the same day that new technologies are developing rapidly, and so are the threats that follow. The hazards associated with generative artificial intelligence have sounded an alarm for the international community, and digital platforms are being abused to subvert science and spread false information and hatred to billions of people. United Nations peacekeeping missions and humanitarian aid operations have also become targets of attack. "This clear and realistic global threat requires us to take clear and coordinated global action." Guterres said that the United Nations is developing the "Code of Conduct for Information Integrity on the United Nations Digital Platform" to prepare for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Summit to be held in September this year. He put forward relevant suggestions at the press conference that can serve as a reference for code of conduct, including calling on governments, technology companies, and other stakeholders to refrain from using, supporting, or spreading false information and hate speech for any purpose. The "Digital Platform Information Integrity Policy Briefing" is based on the recommendations of the United Nations Secretary General's 2021 report "Our Common Agenda", outlining the vision for future global cooperation and multilateral action on this topic. At present, the United Nations has released 11 policy briefs on different themes, which is the latest one to be released. (New News Agency)
