United Nations Secretary General Calls for Stronger Actions to Protect the Oceans

2023-06-09

June 8th is World Ocean Day. United Nations Secretary General Guterres delivered a video message on the same day, calling on the international community to take stronger action to protect the oceans. Guterres said that the ocean is the basis of life, it provides air and food, and regulates the climate and weather. The ocean is the largest treasure trove of biodiversity on Earth. Marine resources maintain communities, prosperity and human health around the world. "We should become the best friend of the ocean. Now, mankind has become its biggest enemy." Guterres said that climate change caused by human activities is warming the earth, disrupting weather patterns and ocean currents, and changing the marine ecosystem and the species living in it. Marine biodiversity is threatened by overfishing, Overexploitation and Ocean acidification. Fish resources are drying up, and chemicals, plastics and human excreta are polluting coastal waters. Guterres said, "But this year's World Ocean Day reminds us that the trend is changing." He said that in 2022, countries will adopt a global goal, that is, to conserve and manage 30% of land, marine and coastal areas by 2030, as well as a landmark fisheries subsidy agreement. At the United Nations Oceans Conference held in Lisbon, Portugal, the world unanimously agreed to promote more proactive ocean action. Guterres said that a legally binding global agreement aimed at ending Plastic pollution is under negotiation. In March of this year, countries reached a historic High Seas Treaty on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction. He emphasized that achieving these initiatives requires collective commitment. On this World Ocean Day, let's continue to push for action. Today and every day, let's put the ocean first
