The Second United Nations Conference on Human Settlements Convened, Focusing on Sustainable Urban Future
2023-06-06
The second UN Habitat Conference opened in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, on the 5th. The conference will focus on such topics as universal affordable housing, urban climate action, urban crisis response, localization of sustainable development goals and multi-level governance, finance and prosperity. The theme of this conference is "Achieving a Sustainable Urban Future through Inclusive and Effective Multilateralism: Achieving Sustainable Development Goals in an Era of Global Crisis". The General Assembly will consider the activities of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN Habitat), review the progress in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, consider the report of the World Urban Forum, launch a special thematic dialogue at the meeting, and discuss the new strategic plan of UN Habitat. At the opening ceremony, the Executive Director of UN-Habitat, Maimuna Mohad Sharif, stated that the world is facing multiple crises, with climate change, environmental pollution, and biodiversity loss further exacerbating inequality between countries and regions. Approximately 3 billion people worldwide are facing housing shortages. UN-Habitat has prioritized adequate housing, climate adaptation, localization of sustainable development goals, and better urban crisis management. In his video address, UN Secretary General Guterres said that the process of achieving the UN's sustainable development goals by 2030 was already over half, but the world was still in danger, inequality was growing, global temperature rise had a disastrous impact, and the COVID-19 hindered the process of poverty reduction. To change all of this, cities will be the key battlefield, and at the same time, revitalization and more inclusive multilateralism are needed to help cities play a role. That afternoon, Chinese Minister of Housing and Urban Rural Development Ni Hong spoke at the plenary session of the conference, stating that it is the common responsibility of countries around the world to address the challenges of global crises and build healthier, safer, and more livable cities. China will continue to support the work of UN-Habitat and work with it to promote the implementation of global development initiatives and the new urban agenda, making unremitting efforts to achieve a sustainable urban future. The current conference will close on the 9th. The United Nations Habitat Conference is held every four years, and the first conference was held in Nairobi on May 27, 2019. (New News Agency)
