My classmate (oil painting) Sun Zixi and Zhan Jianjun's "Getting Started", Mo Pu's "Oath to Join the Party", and Quan Shanshi's "Eight Daughters of the Chinese People Invest in the River"... Recently, the "Language of History - The Fifth Chinese Oil Painting Biennale" was held at the Most Kuiyuan Art Center in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. The exhibition is organized by the China Academy of Fine Arts, the China Oil Painting Society, and the Zhejiang Provincial Federation of Literature and Art. It not only gathers 42 representative historical paintings, but also includes the creation of relevant manuscripts and sketches (partially replicated), totaling more than 610 works, telling the story behind these historical paintings to the audience. The exhibition is divided into five major sections: "baptism", "pursuing distance", "deep construction", "painting and performance", and "portrait". The "Baptism" section focuses on the significance of works in the baptism and shaping of creators' lives, such as Wen Lipeng's "Martyrs Series". The painter stated that creating this series has also purified and sublimated emotions; The "Chasing Far" section focuses on the repainting and accumulation of works in different eras and ways, such as Gao Hong and Gao Tianxiong's father and son's painting of the same theme "Moving to Northern Shaanxi" in different eras; The "deep construction" section focuses on the deep construction of creation, such as Zhong Han's "Looking at the Middle Still Remembering the Return of the Late Tide", which is constantly being improved; The "Painting and Performance" section focuses on the epic theater effects of major theme creations, revealing the significance of massive sketches, such as Feng Fashi's "Liu Hulan's Death"; The "Portrait" section presents the handling of portraits in major theme paintings, such as Jin Shangyi's "Walking out of the Border Town - Shen Congwen". The "Chinese Oil Painting Biennale" has been held for five consecutive sessions since 2012. The first stop of this oil painting biennial exhibition starts from Zunyi, the second stop goes to Xiamen, and the third stop goes to Beijing. Hangzhou, as the fourth stop of the exhibition, with the theme of "The Language of History", brings together some key historical paintings from the founding of New China, focusing on the sketch materials of these works, and conducting language research on historical paintings. These sketch materials comprehensively and clearly reflect the artist's exploration in theme conception, data collection, image sketch, artistic language selection and refining. For example, the exhibition presented multiple small drafts of the oil painting "Sailing - First National Congress of the Communist Party of China", from which we can see the author's portrayal of character images and grasp of the composition of the images. Painter He Hongzhou revealed that during the creation of this work, he and painter Huang Faxiang not only repeatedly reviewed relevant materials, learned about historical facts, and understood the lives of representatives of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China, but also visited South Lake multiple times to observe the Red Boat up close, and combined historical materials to experience the groundbreaking historical moment of 1921, constantly seeking environmental images that match the creative theme. After several drafts, they injected many unique details into the painting, such as the towering black clouds, symbolizing the social environment of the time; The distant dawn symbolizes the bright future of revolution. He Hongzhou said, "I have come to realize more and more that how to integrate personal experience with national memory is the key to creating historical paintings. Historical paintings are not old photos, but need to reflect the artistic qualities of documentary and epic Xu Jiang, Chairman of the Zhejiang Federation of Literary and Art Circles, said, "We can see from this exhibition that these creators are committed not only to a painting, but also to a series of life and life experiences and trials laid out due to this painting.
