How does Qilu culture and Islamic culture coexist?
2023-05-29
Shandong has been a state of Qilu since ancient times, a hometown of etiquette and education, with a profound Confucian cultural tradition. It is also an important practice site for the "Yi Confucian Association". Looking back at the group of writers who systematically elucidated the idea of "Yi Ru Hui Tong" in history, such as Wang Daiyu, Liu Zhi, Jin Tianzhu, Tang Chuanyou, and other representative figures, all coincidentally and accurately labeled Qilu culture and Confucius Confucianism. How to view the historical law of the coexistence of Qilu culture and Islamic culture? What are the inspirations for the practice of "Yiru Huitong" in the new era? Recently, on this topic, "Dao Zhonghua" interviewed Qi Jinjiang, a researcher at the Confucius Institute. Reporter: From the historical perspective of "Yi Ru Hui Tong", what are the characteristics of the "Shandong School" compared to the Shaanxi School, Jinling School, and Yunnan School? Qi Jinjiang: As a significant symbol in the history of Chinese ideological and cultural development, the Yiru Huitong has undertaken important tasks and played an important role in cultural exchange and integration, becoming an important symbol of the Sinicization of Islam. The integration of Islamic and Confucian culture, which includes various aspects of ideological concepts and daily life, includes various levels of worldview, outlook on life, values, methodology, and so on. The early term "Shandong School" can be traced back to the early establishment period of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. At that time, Chang Zhimei, Li Yongshou, and others conducted scripture education at Dongda Temple and Xida Temple on the banks of the canal, calling themselves "Jishui Yixue" or "Jixue" for short. The "Shandong School" generally refers to this school of thought, which integrates Islamic culture with Confucianism in the Pre Qin Dynasty, Neo Confucianism in the Song and Ming Dynasties, and Lu and Wang Xin Xue. Shandong is the hometown of Confucius and the birthplace of Confucian culture. The Confucian cultural background of the "Shandong School" makes it more distinctive compared to the Shaanxi School, Jinling School, Yunnan School, etc., with its integration into daily life, reflection of interpersonal relationships, personal cultivation, integration of "loyalty to the monarch, personal relationships, and recognition of the subject", and adherence to "applying what is learned". From the Yuan Dynasty to the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, it was the initial period of the Shandong School in the Jining region. Islam settled down in Jining along the Grand Canal with Muslim businessmen, built Dongda Temple, Xida Temple and other mosques at the port of the Beijing Hangzhou Canal, and a group of visionary Islamic teachers such as Chang Zhimei and Li Yongshou went out to study and returned to be imams, reformed the old system, innovated management methods, preached sermons, and practiced themselves, which deeply promoted the sinicization of Islam. The Outline of Cognition, written in 1662, is the general outline of Chang Zhimei's "tawḥīd" in his work of "interpreting the classics with Confucianism". Its style of writing is similar to the Confucian classics "Great Learning", "Tai Chi Tu Shuo" and so on, and is consistent with the Confucian culture. As stated by Mr. Li Xinghua, the basic spirit of the Shandong School of Learning is the word "connection": Chang Zhimei compiled Persian grammar to connect the Persian classics taught; Chang Jie's "Boa Dictionary" enables the integration of the taught Persian classics and Arabic classics; The Shandong School connects the local Confucian tradition in Shandong with the Confucian traditions and strengths of the Shaanxi School, Jinling School, and Yunnan School. From the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China period, a large group of teaching staff, Muslim scholars, and non religious research scholars emerged from the Shandong School, which had a significant number, far-reaching influence, and a connecting link between the past and the future.
