May 22nd is International Biodiversity Day. United Nations Secretary General Guterres delivered a video speech on the same day, calling on governments and businesses of all countries to fulfill their commitments, take more decisive and bold actions, and work towards building a sustainable future. Guterres said, "The adoption of the 'Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework' last year marked an important step forward for us, and now it is time to shift from agreement to action." This means ensuring sustainable production and consumption patterns and shifting subsidies from activities that disrupt nature to green solutions; Recognize the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities, as they are the strongest guardians of biodiversity in the world; Promote stronger and more decisive actions by governments and businesses to address the loss of biodiversity and the climate crisis. Guterres warned that one million species are in danger of extinction, as a result of habitat degradation, a surge in pollution, and an increasingly severe climate crisis. He called on the government, civil society, and the private sector to work together to create a sustainable future for humanity. In order to protect the biodiversity of the Earth, 153 countries signed the Convention on the Protection of Biological Diversity at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992. In December 1994, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution designating December 29th as the International Day of Biodiversity. In May 2001, the 55th United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 201, changing the "International Day of Biodiversity" to May 22nd. (New News Agency)
