IMF approves a $3 billion loan to Ghana
2023-05-18
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) issued a statement on the 17th approving the provision of $3 billion in credit support to Ghana and immediately paying approximately $600 million of this amount to Ghana to help it cope with the current economic crisis. The statement states that in recent years, significant external shocks have made Ghana's financial and debt situation increasingly fragile. Ghana's international currency reserves have decreased, its domestic currency has depreciated, inflation rates have continued to rise, and domestic investor confidence has plummeted, leading to a serious crisis. IMF President Georgieva said on social media that "we support Ghana in implementing reforms to address the current economic and financial crisis." Since the beginning of last year, Ghana has been experiencing sustained high inflation and currency depreciation. Last July, the Ghanaian government officially began negotiations with the IMF to seek economic assistance. (New News Agency)
