At around 3am on May 16th, the Chinese deep-sea fishing vessel "Lupeng Yuanyu 028" belonging to Penglai Jinglu Fisheries Co., Ltd. capsized in the central Indian Ocean, causing 39 people on board to lose contact, including 17 Chinese crew members, 17 Indonesian crew members, and 5 Filipino crew members. As of now, no missing individuals have been found, and search and rescue work is ongoing. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and our embassies abroad need to strengthen contact with relevant local parties and coordinate search and rescue work. We need to further strengthen the investigation and risk warning of safety hazards in ocean operations, ensuring the safety of people's lives and property. Li Qiang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Premier of the State Council, issued a directive requesting the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the Ministry of Transport to coordinate relevant efforts to search and rescue crew members in distress, and to make every effort to reduce casualties. We need to further strengthen the safety management of offshore fishing vessels, implement preventive measures, and ensure the safety of maritime transportation and production. The China Maritime Search and Rescue Center will inform relevant countries of the information, and the maritime search and rescue forces of Australia and other countries are conducting on-site search and rescue. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched an emergency mechanism for consular protection, rapidly deploying embassies and consulates in countries such as Australia, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Indonesia, and the Philippines to coordinate active search and rescue efforts in their respective countries.
