2023-05-15
On May 4th, the launch ceremony of the Beijing Islamic Sinicization Exhibition Center, jointly organized by the Beijing Islamic Association and the Dongcheng District Islamic Association, was held at the Dongsi Mosque. The exhibition center showcases the development process of the deep integration of Islam and excellent traditional Chinese culture, and is the first comprehensive exhibition platform in Beijing to reflect the achievements of the sinicization of Islam. Next to the gate of the Dongsi Mosque in Beijing, a stone sign called "Beijing Islamic Sinicization Exhibition Center" stands out. The upper part of the sign adopts a mosque with traditional Chinese architectural style as the main element, symmetrical from left to right, symbolizing the profound historical accumulation and new era cultural imprint of Sinicization of Islam; The middle part is an abstract character for "human", symbolizing the humanistic spirit of "people-oriented" Islam in China; The character "person" in the lower part, along with dots and lines, forms a "present" character, symbolizing the fusion of ancient and modern times and the long-standing path of Sinicization of Islam; The surrounding cloud patterns, with Chinese red as the background color, form a circular shape, symbolizing the gathering of fighting forces, building a shared spiritual home for the Chinese nation, and drawing the largest concentric circle. The Dongsi Mosque was first built in the Yuan Dynasty, and the existing main building was rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty on the basis of preserving the Yuan Dynasty mosque. Its architecture adopts the traditional Chinese courtyard style layout. Since the Ming Dynasty, the Dongsi Mosque has undergone multiple repairs and renovations. The architectural styles of the mosque from different historical periods such as the Yuan, Ming, Qing, and even modern times are distinct and integrated, incorporating strong Chinese cultural characteristics, demonstrating the emphasis on overall artistic image in traditional Chinese architecture. The Dongsi Mosque is a typical representative of the Sinicization style of mosques in China, and holds a special position in the process of Sinicization of Islam in Beijing. The exhibition center located in the Dongsi Mosque has set up 9 themed exhibition areas, including Qinggu Pavilion, Yuehua Zhai, Hongcui Hall, Ginkgo Pavilion, Wangyue Tower, Fude Academy, and Fude Library, aiming to showcase the development process of Beijing's Sinicization of Islam from multiple perspectives, three-dimensional, and comprehensive perspectives, as well as the achievements of the practice of Sinicization in the new era. Stele inscriptions and couplets are a unique traditional cultural carrier of the Chinese nation, and are also commonly used decorative elements in classical Chinese architecture. Steles are inscribed with inscriptions and couplets to express emotions. In the process of sinicization of Islam, it has been deeply infiltrated by the excellent traditional Chinese culture, forming a unique style of Chinese Islamic stele and couplet art. The inscriptions, rubbings, and image materials displayed in the Qing Dynasty Pavilion at the exhibition center are divided into two categories: one is to record history with inscriptions, and the other is to record events and praise virtues. The inscribed boards and couplets on display also have profound meanings. "To be frank with the old chapter" indicates that the mosque in Niujie follows the ancient tradition; The "Gang Wei Er Wu" refers to the five virtues of the Heavenly Way: Nian, Li, Zhai, Ke, Chao, and Ren Wu Dian: Jun Chen, Father and Son, Husband and Wife, Kun Di, and Friends; The "True School of Natural Philosophy" originates from the important topic of human nature in Cheng Zhu's Neo Confucianism. Through the architectural form, inscriptions, plaques, and couplet art of mosques, we can see that Islam has deeply integrated with the excellent traditional Chinese culture for over 1300 years of dissemination and development in China, and has continuously developed on this basis, forming Islamic culture with Chinese characteristics and becoming a component of traditional Chinese culture.
