Thailand holds elections for the lower house of parliament
2023-05-15
Thailand held an election for the lower house of parliament on the 14th, re electing all 500 seats in the lower house. The election committee is expected to release informal vote counting results that evening. In this election, 6679 candidates nominated by 70 political parties in Thailand ran for seats in the House of Commons. The voting takes place from 8pm to 5pm local time, and there are over 90000 polling stations nationwide. Thailand currently has over 52 million legitimate voters. Prime Minister Bayou, who is seeking re-election, told the media in the morning after voting at a polling station in the capital Bangkok that he hopes Thai people with voting rights will vote enthusiastically. This election adopts a "dual vote system", where each voter votes separately for district candidates and political parties. 400 seats in the House of Commons are directly elected by constituency voting, while the other 100 seats are allocated proportionally based on the party's vote rate. The opposition parties, the Thai Party and the Far Progressive Party, have taken the lead in multiple pre election polls. The official results of the lower house election are expected to be announced within 60 days. After the establishment of the new Congress, the President of the Congress will convene all 750 members of the upper and lower houses to vote on the Prime Minister candidates recommended by each political party. Candidates who receive more than half of the support will be elected as Prime Minister. In 2014, the Thai military launched a coup, led by then Army Commander Bayou to establish the National Committee for the Maintenance of Peace and Order, and later became Prime Minister. In 2019, Bayou continued to serve as Prime Minister through parliamentary elections. In January of this year, Bayou officially joined the Thai Solidarity Party and was nominated by the party as the candidate for the next Prime Minister. The last lower house of Thailand's parliament was elected in 2019, with a four-year term that expired on March 23 of this year. (New News Agency)
