Türkiye holds presidential and parliamentary elections
2023-05-15
Türkiye's presidential and parliamentary elections began at 8:00 local time on the 14th (13:00 Beijing time). Three candidates, including current President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, competed for the presidency, and 24 political parties and 151 independent candidates competed for 600 seats in the Grand National Assembly. On the morning of the 14th, Xinhua News Agency reporters saw hundreds of voters lining up at the polling station of Eshrev Bitlis Middle School in the center of the capital Ankara. After verifying their identities, each voter receives two votes for the election of President and Member of Parliament. The polling station is equipped with police and the voting is carried out in an orderly manner. The voting will end at 17:00 (22:00 Beijing time) on the same day. According to the data released by Türkiye's Supreme Electoral Commission, there are about 64.1 million registered voters in Türkiye, including about 3.4 million registered overseas voters. The overseas voting ended on the 9th of this month. The preliminary vote counting results are expected to be announced at midnight local time on the 14th, and the official vote counting results are expected to be announced by the Supreme Election Commission on the 19th of this month. According to the Turkish media, the topics that attracted the attention of voters in this election include economic issues, earthquake disaster response, Syrian refugees in Türkiye, etc. In terms of the presidential election, pre election polls showed that the candidate of the "National Alliance" camp consisting of six opposition parties, Kemal Klechidar Olu, had similar support ratings to the current President Erdogan, while the other candidate, Sinan Olan, had lower support ratings. Analysts believe that due to the strong opposition coalition and the poor domestic economic situation, Erdogan's search for re-election faces challenges. In terms of parliamentary elections, the biggest concern is whether the ruling Justice and Development Party, along with the other four political parties, can maintain a majority of parliamentary seats in the People's Alliance. The President of Türkiye has a five-year term, and the election adopts a two round voting system of direct popular elections. In the first round of voting, if no candidate receives more than half of the votes, the top two candidates with the highest percentage of votes will participate in the second round of competition. The second round of voting will be held on the 28th of this month. The Turkish parliamentary elections implement a proportional representation system, with a threshold of 7% for political parties and caucus alliances to enter the parliament. (New News Agency)
