Teenagers should be alert to idiopathic scoliosis

2023-05-10

Spinal deformity is a deformity of the spine in a three-dimensional plane, and scoliosis is a type of spinal deformity. At present, the etiology of spinal deformities is not yet clear, and 80% of patients cannot obtain an explanation for the cause. According to statistics, there are currently over 3 million patients with scoliosis in China, increasing at the rate of 300000 new cases per year, with over half of them being adolescents. Scoliosis has become the "third major killer" that threatens the health of children and adolescents in China, following obesity and myopia. Idiopathic scoliosis is more common between the ages of 10 and 18. The main types of scoliosis include idiopathic scoliosis, congenital scoliosis, and symptomatic scoliosis. "Although there are many kinds of scoliosis syndrome, it is basically a rare disease, and we need to pay more attention to idiopathic scoliosis." Qiu Guixing, an academician of the CAE Member and chief physician of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Peking Union Medical College Hospital, said at the 721st Xiangshan Scientific Conference "Key Science and Technology for the Prevention and Diagnosis of Spinal Deformities" held recently. Idiopathic scoliosis is the most common type of spinal deformities, accounting for about 75% of patients with spinal deformities. Patients often develop it between the ages of 10 and 18, and the cause is currently unknown. Zhao Yu, chief physician of the Department of Orthopaedics of Peking Union Medical College Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, believes that although the specific cause of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is not clear at present, it has something to do with the incorrect sitting posture, lack of exercise, and overload of schoolbags of teenagers in China. Liu Xiaomin, an associate professor at Beijing University of Technology who has been engaged in long-term research on scoliosis detection and rehabilitation, found that the vast majority of patients with scoliosis have muscle bone structural imbalances or motor function asymmetry. He believes that the imbalance of muscle bone structure may be an important cause of scoliosis. Posture is achieved through a tense muscular system. When the muscular system develops uncoordinated, muscle imbalance can occur. If teenagers maintain poor sitting posture for a long time, it may exacerbate this muscle imbalance, "Liu Xiaomin said. Emerging technologies have helped improve the diagnosis and treatment of scoliosis. "Spinal deformities not only affect patients' physical and mental health, but may also lead to serious complications such as respiratory dysfunction, cardiovascular system disorders, and nerve compression," said Professor Sun Lining, Dean of the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at Suzhou University. Due to the fact that patients with idiopathic scoliosis are born without obvious vertebral deformities or other abnormalities, and their onset time is often in adolescence, multiple experts suggest that schools should strengthen the scientific popularization and physical examination of spinal deformities knowledge among primary and secondary school students, especially during the age range of 10 to 18, when idiopathic scoliosis is more common, and increase the frequency of physical examinations. Qiu Guixing pointed out that artificial intelligence can be used to achieve early screening and diagnosis of scoliosis. For example, developing a new electronic screening tool for scoliosis and implementing the development and transformation of a spinal dynamic balance assessment system can achieve large-scale screening for adolescents. With the help of artificial intelligence, a dynamic model of scoliosis with multi model information fusion can be established to comprehensively evaluate the situation of adolescent scoliosis. The treatment methods for scoliosis are divided into conservative treatment and surgical treatment. Conservative treatment includes regular observation, support therapy, exercise therapy, massage and massage. Bracing therapy is the most effective conservative treatment
