Exercise can cause an increase in immune cells in the blood

Two recent studies conducted by Finnish scientists have concluded that just 10 minutes of exercise can increase the number of immune cells in the blood, which is crucial for fighting cancer. The relevant papers are published in the latest publications of "Scientific Reports" and "Frontiers of Physiology". Tia Koivura, the latest research director and research assistant of Turku University, said that people used to think that cancer patients should rest after diagnosis. But now more and more studies have shown that exercise can improve the prognosis of cancer, but how exercise controls cancer is still unknown. Given this, they conducted two studies aimed at understanding the impact of short-term exercise on immune cells in cancer patients. The two studies involved 28 newly diagnosed lymphoma and breast cancer patients. During the study, the patient underwent 10 minutes of cycling exercise. Scientists collected blood samples before, during, and after the exercise, and analyzed and compared the number of different immune cells (white blood cells) in the blood samples before and after the exercise. The results showed that during exercise, the number of cytotoxic T cells (which can destroy cancer cells) and natural killer cell in the blood of lymphoma patients increased. In addition, the number of white blood cells, intermediate monocytes and B cells also increased. Moreover, there is a correlation between the intensity of exercise and changes in the number of immune cells in both groups of patients: the more the patient's heart rate and blood pressure increase, the more immune cells enter the bloodstream. Koiwura said that although the results indicate that the higher the intensity of exercise, the more immune cells transfer from the storage organs to the blood, only 10 minutes of mild or moderate intensity exercise can lead to an increase in the number of immune cells in the blood, which is crucial for fighting cancer.
