Build a National Botanical Garden and Open the Door to the "Kingdom of Plants"
2023-04-21
On April 18th, China's first national botanical garden celebrated its first anniversary. According to media reports, in the past year, the National Botanical Garden has completed a background survey of plant species resources, adding over 2000 new plants. As of now, a total of 17000 types of plants have been collected, including nearly a thousand rare and endangered plants, making it a demonstration area for plant diversity protection in China. China is one of the countries with the richest plant diversity in the world, and Chinese civilization contains a vast and profound plant culture. Whether it is the peach blossom that is' young and scorching ', or the lotus flower that is' the pond of Bize, with cattail and lotus'; Whether it's the papaya that says' throw me a papaya, repay me with a jade Ju ', or the reeds that say' the reeds are green, and the white dew is frost '- the hundreds of plants in the Book of Songs carry strands of love. The 1094 plant medicines in the Compendium of Materia Medica are various "immortal herbs" that can cure diseases and save people. Today, high value-added fruit tea products such as fungi and kiwifruit have become the "spiritual grass" for farmers to become rich and increase income, and the treasure to help rural revitalization. Plant diversity is an important component of Earth's biodiversity. As the primary producer of ecosystems, plants are crucial for conserving water sources, regulating climate, maintaining soil and water, absorbing and decomposing pollutants, and maintaining natural ecological balance. In the past period, due to factors such as excessive resource utilization, environmental pollution, and global climate change, some plant species have been increasingly threatened. A species is a gene pool, and if a species becomes extinct due to neglect of protection, its losses cannot be estimated. Therefore, establishing a high-quality botanical garden that integrates scientific research, protection, exhibition, and popular science education is a reflection of respecting nature and caring for ecology, and also a strategic need to ensure ecological security. Botanist is the messenger of nature. Botanist know very little about the rare species in the huge plant community. The late Wu Zhengyi, a senior academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, devoted his life to finding out the "family background" of Chinese plants. In the tropical rainforest of Yunnan, Academician Wu Zhengyi fell and sat on the ground due to his focus on observing plants. His companions were all sweating for him, but he was not in a hurry to get up because after falling, he saw a white parasitic plant and recognized it as Ceylon. As the fourth chief editor of flora of China, Academician Wu Zhengyi often sighed: "The compilation and research of flora of China, like Tang Seng's taking scriptures from the west, was completed by many scientists after ninety-nine and eighty-one difficulties." Sincerely, no matter in the past or now, the discovery and confirmation of every new plant species can not be separated from the spirit of scientists who eat wind, bite snow, cross mountains and wade through water, and are willing to be lonely. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, "mountains, rivers, forests, fields, lakes, grass and sand" has been defined as a community of life, and plant diversity protection has been elevated to a national strategy. From the South China Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences dedicated to the protection of tropical and subtropical plants, to the Wuhan Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences based in central China, assisting in the collection and utilization of subtropical and warm temperate strategic plant resources; From Qinling National Botanical Garden to Turpan Desert Botanical Garden, which has preserved a large area of old-growth forest, to Turpan Desert Botanical Garden, which has become a reserve of desert plant resources, today's China is dotted with plant protection sites, and the doors to the "plant kingdom" are being opened for the public.
