Eating salt often damages blood vessels
2023-04-13
Recently, a study conducted by a Swedish scholar found that whether there is high blood pressure or not, eating more salt is likely to cause atherosclerosis in blood vessels. The study analyzed 10778 adults with an average age of 58 years who underwent coronary CT scans. The analysis found that the more salt intake, the faster progress of carotid artery and coronary atherosclerosis. For every 1000mg increase in urinary sodium excretion, the severity of carotid plaque, coronary calcification score, and coronary stenosis increased by 3%, 4%, and 4%, respectively. The same applies to the analysis results conducted in patients with blood pressure below 140/90mmHg or without cardiovascular disease. Researchers suggest that consuming salt can damage blood vessels, even before developing hypertension. The research results have once again strengthened the recommendation of the World Health Organization and other academic organizations to limit salt to less than 5g per day. For individuals with hypertension and cardiovascular disease, salt restriction is particularly important. For Chinese people, eating salt requires more attention, and their salt intake is 12g/day. Replacing salt is also a good way. If every household replaces ordinary salt with low sodium salt, and all restaurants, canteens, and food companies also use low sodium salt, then the total number of deaths in China will be reduced by more than 10%.
