Airbus test UAV autonomous aerial refueling

2023-04-12

According to foreign media reports, recently, Airbus Defence, together with aerospace companies and subsidiaries, conducted flight tests of autonomous aerial refueling technology for UAVs. According to the report, the test in this phase was carried out in two times, one A310 MRTT tanker and 12 Do-DT25 UAVs were dispatched, and the test flight time was about 12 hours. The purpose was to verify the development of autonomous aerial refueling technology for UAVs. It is reported that this technology is part of Airbus's "independent partner" project. A310 MRTT tanker is a multi-purpose refueling transport aircraft developed by Airbus on the basis of A310 passenger aircraft. It can be used not only for aerial refueling, but also for personnel, cargo transportation and medical evacuation after modification. The Do-DT25 drone is a low-cost target aircraft developed by Airbus and is currently being used for technical testing and verification by the company. Airbus Defense and Aerospace stated that the two test flights lasted for about 6 hours each, and four Do-DT25 drones independently received commands from artificial intelligence and collaborative control systems during the test flights, with no personnel involved. The minimum distance between the drone and the A310 MRTT tanker during test flight is 45.72 meters. Airbus Defense and Space officials have stated that the next phase of testing is planned to be conducted over the waters of Cadiz Bay by the end of this year. In this stage of testing, the Do-DT25 unmanned aerial vehicle participating in the test flight adopts two different configurations and uses navigation data from different sources to guide it to the designated location. The next stage of testing will focus on the deep application of artificial intelligence in navigation and autonomous control, and use two unmanned aerial vehicles to simulate fuel dispensers and receivers, demonstrating multi aircraft autonomous control and collision prevention algorithms. According to foreign media, these test flights will pave the way for the research and development of "independent formation flying and aerial refueling technology" of Airbus Defense and Space Company. This technology can simultaneously refuel multiple refueling aircraft with higher efficiency, reduce the number of refueling crew members, and expand the mission range of drones. (New News Agency)
