Recently, the Ministry of Science and Technology announced the "2022 National Excellent Popular Science Works List", with 100 works (sets) listed. This annual evaluation activity for popular science books has been ongoing for 13 consecutive years since 2011, becoming one of the important popular science awards established by domestic government departments with high level, strong continuity, good credibility, and social recognition. Award evaluation is a display of existing excellent achievements and also puts forward new requirements for current and future popular science creation, leading the direction of creation, stimulating creative vitality, and guiding high-quality creation. Entering a new era, it is necessary for batches of original popular science products to continue to emerge. In recent years, the overall creation of original popular science works in China has shown a positive trend. Wang Liming, a popular science writer and professor at the School of Life Sciences at Zhejiang University, once mentioned that domestic readers often have a stereotype that "the best batch of scientific reading materials must be imported from overseas, created by famous foreign scientists or scientific writers. In the past, imported books often topped the rankings of various popular science books, as evidenced by the National Excellent Popular Science Works released by the Ministry of Science and Technology. In 2012, a total of 30 works were selected, of which 9 were from countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Russia, with 30% of the books imported. Among the 100 award-winning works announced this year, only 6 books (sets) were introduced, accounting for less than 10%. Over the past decade, the total number of award-winning popular science works has increased and the proportion of introduced works has significantly decreased, which indirectly reflects the improvement in the quantity and quality of original popular science works. In the list of awards announced this year, a prominent highlight is the participation of multiple academicians and experts in the creation of popular science boutiques, playing a demonstration and leading role. In 2021, the State Council issued the "Outline of the Action Plan for National Science Literacy (2021-2035)", emphasizing "enhancing the ability to create and disseminate high-quality science popularization content resources" and proposing "supporting the growth of science popularization creative talents and cultivating leading figures in science popularization creation". In the new era, the construction of the science popularization creative team not only requires the growth of quantity, but also requires leading talents with leading roles. Among the award-winning works, multiple books (sets) were independently or jointly created by academicians and experts. For example, "The Temperature of Medicine", "A Brief Introduction to the Deep Sea", and "Academicians Talk about Reducing Natural Disasters" series (6 volumes) were written by Academicians Han Qide, Wang Pinxian, and Chen Yong respectively. "Academicians' Earth Life Lesson for Children" (8 volumes) was jointly completed by Academicians Rong Jiayu, Zhou Zhong, and two others; There are also some works led by academicians to be completed, such as the science popularization picture book "The Big World of Small Bacteria" series (2 volumes), which is edited by Academician Cong Bin as the chief editor and organized experts in the field of human microecology and immune regulation research. The "Science Popularization Chinese Book Series: Frontier Technology" series (4 volumes) is led by five academicians, including Zhou Qi, Ding Kuiling, and Chen Jia'er. It can be said that academicians and experts participating in popular science creation play a leading role from the perspective of the creative subject, which helps to attract more scientific researchers to join the popular science creation team and promote China's original popular science boutiques from the plateau to the peak. As a high-level award evaluation activity, the selection results also reflect direction guidance from dimensions such as theme and content.
