2023-04-07
The fourth summit of the Mekong River Commission was held in Vientiane, Laos, on the 5th. The meeting focused on the innovation and cooperation of water resources security and sustainable development in the Mekong River basin. This summit is hosted by Laos. Lao Prime Minister Song Sai Sipantun, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Myung jung, and Thailand's Director of the National Water Resources Office, Surasri Kidimonton, attended the meeting, with representatives of dialogue partner countries and development partners present. Chinese Minister of Water Resources Li Guoying led a delegation to attend the summit and delivered a speech at the conference. The meeting issued the Vientiane Declaration, affirming the progress and achievements made by all parties since the third summit of the Mekong River Commission held in Cambodia in 2018. The declaration expects all parties to strengthen cooperation, innovate and develop new policies to address potential risks and challenges in the Mekong River Basin, and bring benefits. Lao Prime Minister Song Sai said at a press conference held after the summit that the release of the Vientiane Declaration signifies that participating leaders reaffirm their commitment to ensuring the sustainable development of water and other resources in the Mekong River Basin through cooperation, and all parties will work together to promote the implementation of the Declaration and achieve results. Li Guoying stated that as a member of the Lancang Mekong River Basin, China has always adhered to the correct concept of righteousness and benefit, insisted on promoting both protection and development, and fully fulfilled its obligations and responsibilities through practical actions. In order to actively respond to the severe floods and droughts in the Lancang Mekong Basin, China has scientifically dispatched cascade hydropower stations on the Lancang River, fully leveraging the disaster prevention and reduction role of "regulating flood and supplementing drought". In 2016 and 2019, severe droughts occurred in the Lancang Mekong River Basin. Despite the reduction in water inflow from the Lancang River, China made every effort to ensure the reasonable discharge of the Lancang River and implemented emergency water replenishment at the request of downstream countries, helping Mekong River countries effectively respond to the drought and achieving a year without major disasters. The Mekong River Commission was established in April 1995. Its member countries are Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam along the Mekong River. In 1996, China and Myanmar became dialogue partners of the Mekong River Commission. (New News Agency)
