2023-04-04
Recently, six departments including the Ministry of Housing and Urban Rural Development and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced the sixth batch of villages included in the list of traditional Chinese villages, with a total of 1336 villages selected. So far, 8155 traditional villages in China have been included in the national protection list. Traditional villages are a spatial carrier for nurturing and preserving the fundamental culture of the Chinese nation, carrying the profound historical heritage of agricultural civilization and reflecting the traditional idea of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. Protecting traditional villages is not only a choice of the times to retain the charm and nostalgia of the countryside, expand and enrich the modern social life landscape, but also a practical measure to continue agricultural civilization and promote the excellent traditional Chinese culture. It has important practical significance and historical value for promoting livable and beautiful rural construction, maintaining cultural diversity, and safeguarding the spiritual home and cultural roots of the Chinese nation. Since China launched the survey and recommendation of traditional villages in 2012, six batches of traditional villages have been selected for national protection. Through the implementation of traditional village protection projects, a large number of endangered traditional villages, along with their nurtured local culture, have been preserved, forming the world's largest, most abundant in content and value, most complete in protection, and lively inherited agricultural civilization heritage protection group. Throughout the more than ten years of protection practice, from preserving and restoring the original style, to activating and utilizing, promoting conservation through use, and then to centralized and integrated planning, the protection methods of traditional villages have been constantly updated, and the vivid exploration of protection paths such as constructing open-air museums and recreating cultural spaces has made traditional villages vibrant and dynamic in the new era. For example, Xigubao Village in Nuanquan Town, Weixian County, Hebei Province, which was selected as one of the first batch of national protected villages, is a representative village of Babaizhuangbao in Weizhou. It relies on the overall regional protection and construction of Nuanquan Ancient Town, deeply cultivates the characteristic cultural and tourism industry, receives over 300000 tourists annually, drives local villagers to lift themselves out of poverty and increase their income, and basically achieves "self-sufficiency and self-protection". However, we should also note that in the process of protecting and utilizing traditional villages, there are problems such as a thousand villages facing one side, demolishing ancient buildings to build new ones, destructive protection, and hollowing out. Excessive tourism development and rigid commercial integration have also attracted attention and concern from all parties. The author believes that the reason for these problems is not only due to insufficient funding and institutional design, but also due to people's understanding of the motivation and concept of protection. In some places, excessive emphasis is placed on the establishment of cultural symbols while neglecting the improvement of residents' quality of life in protection practices, excessive emphasis is placed on architectural patterns and village planning while neglecting the living environment reflected in the countryside, and excessive reliance on the leading role of the government while neglecting the participation of multiple subjects, which to some extent leads to the loss of local individuality and local characteristics. To truly make traditional villages a dwelling of nostalgia and nostalgia, it is necessary to establish a more systematic protection concept and further explore the rich connotations of "tradition". Firstly, overall planning should be carried out for the local landscape of traditional villages. The landscape here includes not only the external architectural layout, but also natural landscapes, cultural relics, and rural scenery. When formulating village protection plans, it is necessary to conduct in-depth organization and research on local characteristic landscape resources, and on this basis, innovate more diverse development and utilization mechanisms. Secondly, respect the original
