Perspective on the New Progress of Seed Industry Revitalization from the 2023 China Seed Conference
2023-04-04
Agricultural modernization relies on seeds as the foundation. At the 2023 China Seed Conference held in Sanya, Hainan, the Jinan Fansi Valley Forum focused on the protection and utilization of germplasm resources, innovation and problem-solving, enterprise support, and market purification. Participants put forward many new suggestions for seed industry revitalization. The reporter learned at the 2023 China Seed Conference that in recent years, China has taken a series of measures in four aspects: germplasm resource survey and collection, precise identification, resource bank construction, and development and utilization, achieving new results in germplasm resource protection and utilization. The National Crop Germplasm Resource Bank and Marine Fishery Resource Bank have been established and put into operation, the construction of the Livestock and Poultry Germplasm Resource Bank has started, and a total of 520000 new agricultural germplasm resources have been collected through census. Accurate identification has been carried out, and the level of resource protection and utilization has been improved. In terms of census, China has organized the third census of crop and livestock germplasm resources and the first census of aquaculture germplasm resources. Salvageously protected a group of rare and endangered resources such as kiwifruit and Yangtze River swordfish, and newly discovered multiple local breeds of livestock and poultry such as the Yuxi black pig. Several experts pointed out at the seed conference that the protection and utilization of germplasm resources in China need to be further strengthened. Deng Xiuxin, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and academician of the CAE Member, said that considerable progress has been made in the collection and conservation of horticultural crop resources in China, but the evaluation and identification are insufficient. At present, there is a significant gap in the number of germplasm resources preserved in the national vegetable mid-term database compared to the top ranked country, and the proportion of resources preserved in China is relatively low compared to foreign resources. Experts believe that the next step is to solidly complete the census of agricultural germplasm resources, establish a mechanism for resource identification through central and local collaboration and science enterprise cooperation, and lay a solid foundation for breeding resources. At the same time, expand resource sources through international cooperation. This year, China will comprehensively complete the national agricultural germplasm resource census. At present, relevant departments are gradually carrying out census data verification and archiving, resource cataloging and warehousing, and will promote resource identification, registration, and preservation. "Accurate identification of crop germplasm resources is a long-term task, which needs a long time to work." Li Yinghui, deputy director of the Crop Germplasm Resources Center of the Crop Science Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said that in the future, we should focus on the urgent needs of agricultural production such as stabilizing grain and expanding oil, improving unit yield, and focus on digging excellent germplasm such as high oil and high yield soybeans, short growing period rape, dense and machine harvesting maize, and salt tolerant crops. Build a batch of precision identification and genetic resource mining platforms, accelerate information construction, achieve synchronous promotion of precision identification and shared utilization, and promote the continuous transformation of resource advantages into innovative and industrial advantages. Innovative research leads to breakthroughs in new varieties and technologies, and innovative breeding achievements have become the focus of attention at the seed conference. Cut and grow like leeks, sow and harvest multiple times at once... Hu Fengyi, Dean of the School of Agriculture at Yunnan University, introduced the latest progress in the research and application of perennial rice. Since the implementation of the Seed Industry Revitalization Action, all parties have accelerated the promotion of innovation and cultivated multiple breakthrough new varieties. The three independently cultivated white feather broiler breeds in China have broken the dependence on foreign sources, with a market share of over 15%; The "Huaxi Cattle", which is mainly cultivated by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences Beijing Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, has become a new beef cattle breed with completely independent intellectual property rights in China
