China Cuba Joint Venture Electric Vehicle Factory Helps Cuba's Economic and Social Development
2023-03-21
At the production line of the Caribbean Electric Vehicle Factory in Havana, Cuba, workers are busy assembling electric motorcycles. "My task is to carry out strict quality testing on each vehicle," worker Renaldo Lewis, who is currently working, told reporters. The Caribbean Electric Vehicle Factory was jointly established by China's Tianjin Dongxing Industrial Group (hereinafter referred to as "Tianjin Dongxing") and Cuba's state-owned bicycle factory "Minawa" in 2019. It is an important joint venture project in the manufacturing industry between China and Cuba. Among them, the Chinese side invests in equipment, technology, decoration, materials, etc., while the ancient side is mainly responsible for assembly. "Minawa" bicycle factory has a long history with China. In the 1990s, the factory was built with assistance from China, and Tianjin Dongxing subsequently supplied parts for it. With the changes of times and market, Tianjin Dongxing has seen new opportunities in Cuba. "In recent years, China's new energy vehicle industry has developed rapidly, while Cuba is also vigorously promoting energy conservation and emission reduction, addressing energy shortages and environmental pollution. Therefore, both sides have common goals," Wei Yunpu, Chairman of Tianjin Dongxing, told reporters. Wei Yunpu also found that with the gradual increase of individual businesses and small and medium-sized micro enterprises in Cuba, the market has generated different demands for electric vehicles. "From the courtesy function of electric motorcycles to the use of electric tricycles for carrying people with cargo, electric four-wheeled vehicles now also usher in huge development space." In 2021, the Caribbean Electric Vehicle Factory was put into trial production. Luis remembers that, at that time, due to the impact of the COVID-19, personnel exchanges had not yet fully recovered. More than 60 employees, including him, discussed the details of the production process with Chinese engineers through video conferences every week to ensure the normal operation of the enterprise. Over the past year, the electric vehicle products of the Caribbean Electric Vehicle Factory have been sold throughout Cuba, and some of them have been exported to neighboring countries, contributing to Cuba's foreign exchange earnings. Julio Peres, director of the Caribbean Electric Vehicle Factory, told reporters that the joint venture has created more than 300 jobs in Cuba and helped many Cuban families improve their lives. In addition, these electric vehicles can help improve local transportation inconvenience and help people to travel green. During a recent visit to the Caribbean Electric Vehicle Factory, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Planning Alejandro Hill of Cuba emphasized the need to adhere to quality, design, and price controls, provide after-sales services, maintain stable production, and meet market demand. The company has plans to meet market demand. Wei Yunpu said that this year, the factory plans to further expand production to develop and produce electric vehicles suitable for different ages and uses, and increase production. "We have received a lot of market demand feedback and will fully consider the actual situation in Cuba and neighboring countries to produce more models," Wei Yunpu said. (Liao Xinshe)
