Make high-quality lunch breaks standard for primary and secondary school students

2023-03-21

At this year's two sessions of the National People's Congress, two deputies to the National People's Congress (NPC) proposed to promote "lying down" instead of "lying down" in primary and secondary schools nationwide, fully ensuring that primary and secondary students achieve high-quality lunch breaks. The proposal of the two representatives to "lie down and sleep" has been approved and hotly discussed by a large number of parents and netizens. The management and quality of sleep for primary and secondary school students has always been highly valued. In 2021, the General Office of the Ministry of Education issued the "Notice on Further Strengthening the Sleep Management of Primary and Secondary School Students", stating that "sleep is an important link in the recovery and integration of the body and the consolidation of memory, and is crucial to promoting brain development, bone growth, visual protection, physical and mental health, and improving learning ability and efficiency of primary and secondary school students." It requires that primary school students should sleep up to 10 hours per day, and junior high school students should sleep up to 9 hours per day, High school students should reach 8 hours. The document further clarifies that "primary and secondary schools should guide parents and students, establish student schedules, and reasonably determine students' bedtime at night based on their individual sleep status, lunch break time, and other realities, while ensuring students' sleep time requirements.". This document, commonly known as the "sleep order", does not specify specific requirements and regulations for lunch breaks, but clearly points out the importance of lunch breaks. Due to the objective existence of school conditions and individual differences among children, there are currently significant differences in the management and regulations of lunch breaks in schools and even in classes. Even in schools where lunch breaks are uniformly arranged, most students sit at their desks and rest in the morning. "Sleeping on the stomach" can also achieve the purpose of rest, but from a medical perspective, there are many disadvantages, and it is also one of the reasons why many children are unwilling to take a lunch break. Whether adults or children, a good lunch break can improve work and learning efficiency and make the afternoon energetic. Especially in summer, the daytime time becomes longer, and children generally sleep later at night, resulting in less sleep at night. If there is no sufficient lunch break, it is easy to become drowsy during class in the afternoon. Teachers should come up with various ways to help students "refresh" when facing listless children. During afternoon physical education classes, children engage in physical exercise without rest, which not only fails to achieve the exercise effect, but may also be harmful to the body. In this case, a good lunch break becomes very important. "The way of literature and martial arts is to relax one by one." Only when relaxation is moderate can we ensure the healthy growth of the body. For children, the right to rest should be as important as the right to study and participate in physical exercise. On the one hand, schools should strive to achieve the required sleep time by guiding students and parents to manage their sleep at home; On the other hand, schools should also provide a better lunch break environment and a more reasonable lunch break time as much as possible to make up for the lack of sleep time at home and alleviate the fatigue caused by students' continuous learning during the daytime. In recent years, with the improvement of classroom space and educational equipment, there have been many cases of "lying down and sleeping freely" during school lunchtime breaks. Creating conditions for students to take naps and achieve better quality naps is no longer a challenge in terms of technology, space, and investment. "All for the sake of students, all for the sake of students." Local education administrative departments and schools may wish to exert their subjective initiative, adapt measures to local conditions, and adapt to people
