Outdoor lights are too bright or increase the risk of diabetes

2023-03-07

The research conducted by Ning Guang's team of Shanghai Ruijin Hospital among nearly 100000 Chinese people shows that there are bright lights outside the window at night, which increases the possibility of diabetes. Research shows that outdoor light brightness at night is positively correlated with glycosylated hemoglobin, fasting blood glucose, 2-hour postprandial blood glucose level and insulin resistance index, and is associated with pancreatic islets β The cell function index was negatively correlated. In other words, the brighter the outside light at night, the greater the problem of blood glucose metabolism. In addition, the researchers also found that the risk of diabetes increased by 7% when outdoor light exposure at night increased by one quantile. This suggests that artificial lighting at night may be a new potential risk factor for diabetes. These results were obtained by considering age, gender, education, smoking, drinking, physical activity, family history of diabetes, family income, urban and rural residence, antihypertensive drugs, lipid-lowering drugs and body mass index. How does light relate to diabetes? The reason may be that it disturbs the biological clock, resulting in changes in physiological and metabolic factors, including activity level, body temperature, food intake, lipid distribution, insulin sensitivity, glucose metabolism, and plasma melatonin, glucocorticoid and fatty acid levels. In any case, the problem of light pollution at night should be paid attention to. Previous studies have shown that light exposure at night can also increase the risk of hospitalization and death of patients with coronary heart disease. (Xinhua News Agency)
