Britain and Europe make new arrangements on the trade issue of Northern Ireland after the "Brexit"

2023-03-01

British Prime Minister Richie Sunak and European Commission President Ursula Vondrein confirmed on the 27th that the UK and the EU have reached an agreement called "Windsor Framework" to make new arrangements for trade matters involving Northern Ireland after the UK's "Brexit". Sunak held a joint press conference with the visiting von der Leyen in Windsor that day. Sunak said that under the "Windsor Framework", the UK would achieve a smooth flow of goods within its territory. Among the goods transported from the British Isle of Great Britain to Northern Ireland, the goods destined for Northern Ireland will use the green lane, and the goods planned to be transported to EU countries will use the red lane, and the inspection of goods in the green lane will be simplified. The "Windsor Framework" also helps to solve the supply problem of drugs approved by the UK drug regulatory authority in Northern Ireland. Von der Leyen said at a press conference on the 27th that the "Windsor Framework" will open a "new chapter" for Britain and Europe. The British Prime Minister's Office confirmed on the same day that the "Windsor Framework" would replace the "Northern Ireland Protocol". The British Parliament will vote on the new agreement later. The "Northern Ireland Protocol" is part of the British "Brexit" agreement. According to the agreement, Northern Ireland remained within the European Single Market and the European Union Customs Union to prevent the emergence of a "hard border" on land in the island of Ireland. However, some goods entering Northern Ireland from the British Isle of Great Britain are subject to customs and border security inspection. After the signing of the "Brexit" agreement, the British side constantly complained that the protocol was rigid, interfered with the trade in Northern Ireland, aggravated political instability, and demanded amendments. The negotiation between Britain and Europe on the amendment of the Protocol lasted for a period of time, and the relationship between the two sides was once tense. (Xinhua News Agency)
