Zanzibar Stone City is located on the west coast of Zanzibar Island, Tanzania, across the sea from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city. Historically, it was the economic and trade center of the Zanzibar Empire and the capital of the Sultanate of Zanzibar. For nearly a thousand years, Stone City has integrated various cultures from Africa, Asia and Europe. Because most of the buildings in the city are built of coral stones, Stone City is named after it. In 2000, Stone City was included in the The World Heritage List by UNESCO. (Xinhua News Agency)
