The construction of National Germplasm Bank 2.0 started seed industry "chip" ushered in digital identity
2023-03-01
The "giant" rice with a height of 2.4 meters, the corn with a thin shell wrapped in each grain, and the "pocket" cotton growing in the southernmost part of China... These rare and exotic species that are hard to see in life are now stored in the national crop germplasm database. Now, they will usher in their own "digital identity", better release their own value, and improve the efficiency of germplasm resources sharing and utilization. Crop germplasm resources are the "chip" of agriculture and the source of crop seed industry innovation. On February 28, the "National Crop Germplasm Bank 2.0 Project" jointly sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Tencent was officially launched in Beijing. The two sides will carry out all-round cooperation around the protection and utilization of digital information of germplasm resources, among which Tencent will donate 20 million yuan to support the informatization construction of the national germplasm bank. This means that by promoting the integration of resource genetic information and physical objects and the development of digital seed industry tools, the informatization construction capacity of the national crop germplasm bank will be expected to be improved, thus promoting the innovative development of the "chip" of the crop seed industry. The National Crop Germplasm Bank is responsible for the long-term strategic conservation of crop germplasm resources across the country. It is known as the "Noah's Ark" of seeds and the "Central Bank" of germplasm resources. The new National Crop Germplasm Bank was completed in September 2021 and will be officially put into use this year. By the end of 2022, the total amount of resources collected and preserved in China has exceeded 540000, protecting a large number of rare and endangered resources; Each year, more than 100000 copies are effectively utilized for scientific research, breeding and production, which strongly supports crop breeding and agricultural scientific and technological innovation in China. If the conservation and physical sharing of crop germplasm resources are compared to "germplasm bank 1.0", then promoting the integration and efficient sharing of genetic information and physical resources is "germplasm bank 2.0". Liu Xu, an academician of the CAE Member and the academic leader of crop germplasm resources in China, pointed out that at present, we are organizing the identification and evaluation of important crop traits around the major needs of the agricultural industry. To this end, the construction of the big data information system of germplasm resources is crucial to improve the conditions and capabilities of the new national germplasm bank, promote the high-quality development of the protection and utilization of crop germplasm resources, and support the sharing and application of identified excellent resources. "How to further release the value of resources and promote the high-quality development of scientific and technological innovation in seed industry is the new historical mission of germplasm resources work. The project will accelerate the integration of genetic information and physical objects of germplasm resources in China and the development of digital seed industry tools," said Zhou Wenbin, director of the Institute of Crop Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The reporter of Science and Technology Daily learned that the donation will be completed in stages and batches within three years to support the three aspects of "Germplasm Bank 2.0 Project": first, build and improve the data integration and analysis system of Germplasm Bank 2.0; The second is to improve the conditions for identifying crop germplasm resources; Third, build a visual interactive information display system. Through these three aspects of work, the National Germplasm Bank will build a comprehensive service platform of digital germplasm resources information for breeders, provide digital tools for accelerating breeding, as well as genome-wide genotyping information that can share germplasm resources, so as to solve the problem from resources to breeding
