The Chinese Special Envoy for Climate Change was awarded the Nobel Special Contribution Award for Sustainable Development by the Sustainable Development Foundation
2023-02-23
On February 21st local time, Peter Nobel, Chairman of the Nobel Foundation for Sustainable Development, announced that the first Special Contribution Award for Sustainable Development will be awarded to China's Special Envoy for Climate Change, Xie Zhenhua, in recognition of his tremendous contributions to global efforts to address climate change and sustainable development. Xie Zhenhua delivered a speech through a video, stating that China is facing multiple tasks such as development, people's livelihood, poverty reduction, and environmental protection. It is unimaginable that China must walk the industrialization and urbanization path of developed countries for two to three hundred years within a few decades, and control and reduce pollution and emissions in a shorter period of time, from peaking carbon to achieving carbon neutrality. Chinese leaders are visionary and have long made it clear that they cannot follow the old path of pollution first and then governance. They actively explore the path of sustainable development and have successively addressed acid rain, sandstorms, river basin and urban air pollution, achieving significant results. He said that he has been engaged in work related to ecological protection, resource conservation, circular economy, and climate change for many years, and has personally experienced the process of sustainable development and ecological civilization from concept to practice in China. "China's practice has shown that actions to protect the ecological environment and address climate change not only do not hinder economic development, but also cultivate new growth drivers, create new employment opportunities, and improve the quality and efficiency of development." Chinese Ambassador to Sweden, Cui Aimin, attended the award ceremony on the same day and delivered a speech on behalf of Xie Zhenhua. The Nobel Foundation for Sustainable Development was initially established by the Nobel family in Zurich, Switzerland in 2007, and its predecessor was the Nobel Charity Trust. The foundation encourages research, development, action, and implementation of sustainable solutions, and establishes sustainable development awards to recognize individuals or institutions who have made outstanding contributions to sustainable development.
