The earliest Xixia porcelain kiln site found in Ningxia
2023-02-16
On February 15, the reporter learned from the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region that the State Administration of Cultural Heritage released the latest archaeological progress of the Suyukou porcelain kiln site in Helan, Ningxia at the important progress meeting of the "Archaeological China" major project held in Beijing on that day. Suyukou porcelain kiln site is located in Suyukou, Helan Mountain, Ningxia. It is a fine white porcelain handicraft production site in the Western Xia Dynasty. From 2021 to October 2022, with the approval of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, the Ningxia Institute of Archaeology and Fudan University conducted archaeological excavations. It is reported that the site covers an area of about 40000 square meters, 13 kilns have been found, and pits for producing porcelain clay, coal, quartz, lime and other raw materials and fuels have also been found on the hillside outside. This archaeological work excavated two kilns, No. 1 and No. 2 (Y1 and Y2). Y1 and Y2 are horseshoe-shaped semi-inverted flame steamed bun kilns, built with stones, and composed of fire chamber, kiln chamber, chimney and retaining walls on both sides. The remains of the workshop are shared by two kilns, using coal as fuel, including mud storage tank, pulley pit, glaze tank, storage room, etc. The kiln furniture is mainly made of straight cylindrical porcelain saggar. When firing, saggar is used for firing, and glaze is used for sealing between saggar. Porcelain products are mainly fine white porcelain, mainly used for daily use such as bowls, plates, candles and dishes, as well as large utensils and building materials such as flowered bottles and holding pots. The fetus is white and delicate, the glaze color is warm and moist, white and slightly cyan, and the glass texture and transparency are strong. Judging from the unearthed artifacts, Y1 and Y2 were in the Western Xia period, which began to burn later in the early Western Xia period. A number of saggers with the character of "official" were found in the site, which can be inferred as the firing place of the porcelain used by the Western Xia court, with the nature of "official kiln" in the Western Xia Dynasty. The Suyukou porcelain kiln site is the earliest Xixia porcelain kiln site found at present, revealing a new type of kiln industry. It is the first time to find a large-scale glaze sealing saggar mouth firing technology outside Shanglin Lake, Zhejiang Province. It is the first time to find a large amount of quartz in the porcelain body, glaze and saggar firing technology in the northwest region, filling the gap of fine white porcelain firing in the northwest region. The complex kiln industry also reflects the economy of the Song and Xixia dynasties The history of cultural exchanges. (Outlook New Era)
