Phase II of "China Compound Eye" started
2023-02-15
On February 14, the second phase of "China's compound eye" - large-scale distributed aperture deep space detection radar project was launched in Yunyang County, Chongqing. The project will build 25 30-meter aperture radars, which are planned to be completed in 2025. After completion, it will become the world's most comprehensive deep-space detection radar, realize the detection of asteroids tens of thousands of kilometers away, and provide important support for China's near-Earth asteroid impact defense and planetary scientific research. Fill in the domestic gap to support the asteroid defense plan. Asteroid impact is one of the greatest threats to the earth. Deep space detection radar is an important means of asteroid impact defense, which can significantly improve the accuracy of asteroid orbit determination and obtain the high-resolution morphology of asteroids. The "China Compound Eye" project, led by Beijing University of Technology, plans to build the world's farthest detection radar in Chongqing, to meet the major needs of countries such as near-Earth asteroid defense through high-resolution observation of asteroids, and fill the gap in this field in China. The project will be constructed in three phases. The first phase of the "distributed radar astrometry verification test site" is located in Mingyue Mountain, Liangjiang New District, Chongqing. It is composed of four 16-meter aperture radars. The construction was completed in December 2022. At the time of start-up and operation, China's first three-dimensional radar image of the lunar crater foundation was successfully taken. The "Large-scale Distributed Aperture Deep Space Detection Radar Project", as the second phase of the "China Compound Eye" project, has landed on Zhongzhou Island, Longjiao Town, Yunyang County, Chongqing, covering a total area of more than 300 mu, and will build 25 30-meter aperture radars. After the completion of the second phase of the project, the construction of the third phase of the "China Compound Eye" project will also be planned. The number of radar units will be expanded to 100, which can expand the boundaries of human radar deep space exploration and provide support for the world's cutting-edge scientific research such as planetary formation. Break through the research difficulties and realize the cooperative work of multiple radars. The traditional concentrated aperture radar is like a biological monocular, which requires a large aperture for long-distance observation and is physically difficult to achieve. It has been the direction of radar researchers at home and abroad to synthesize multiple small aperture radars into large aperture radars efficiently. "The difficulty of this idea is to realize the cooperative work of multiple radars. The realization of 'China's compound eye' can be said to be a breakthrough development in radar technology." Zeng Tao, a professor at Beijing University of Technology, said that the compound eye of insects is coordinated by multiple small eye nerves, and remote observation is realized through "brain" processing. "China's compound eye" is like the compound eye of insects, and coordinated observation is carried out by multiple radar combinations, It breaks through the limitations of power and aperture of traditional centralized aperture radar, and realizes deeper space detection at a longer distance. It is understood that each radar unit of "China Compound Eye" has its own antenna aperture, transmitter and receiver, which are connected to the intelligent control operator system through the synchronous distribution link, thus achieving the effect of "uniformity" and "building a tower of sand". The reporter learned from the Chongqing Municipal Development and Reform Commission that at present, the "China Compound Eye" project has been included in the major projects of Chongqing during the "14th Five-Year Plan". Long Teng, president of Beijing University of Technology and academician of the CAE Member, said in his speech at the commencement ceremony that the official launch of the large-scale distributed aperture deep space detection radar project marks that the "China Compound Eye" project will enter a new research stage, which is also Beijing
