International Energy Agency: Global electricity demand will accelerate in the next three years

2023-02-10

The 2023 Electricity Market Report released by the International Energy Agency on the 8th stated that global electricity demand growth will accelerate to an average of 3% per year from 2023 to 2025, with growth mainly coming from the Asian region. Renewable energy will dominate global electricity supply growth and, together with nuclear energy, meet the vast majority of incremental electricity demand. The report points out that, affected by the energy crisis and abnormal weather conditions in some regions, the growth of global power demand will slow to 2% in 2022, lower than the level before the COVID-19 epidemic. Affected by the soaring energy prices, the EU's electricity demand in 2022 decreased by 3.5% year-on-year. Affected by strong economic recovery and hot summer weather, India's electricity consumption increased by 8.4%. The demand for electricity in the United States increased by 2.6%. The report predicts that global electricity demand growth will accelerate to an average of 3% per year over the next three years, with over 70% of the demand growth coming from some Asian regions. The Director of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, stated that global electricity demand growth is bound to accelerate, but the growth rate of renewable energy and nuclear energy can meet almost all new demand. The International Energy Agency predicts that the proportion of renewable energy in the global power generation mix will increase from 29% in 2022 to 35% by 2025, while the proportion of coal-fired and gas-fired power generation will decrease. In the coming years, the global carbon emissions intensity from power generation will continue to decline. (Lai Xin She)
