The United Nations and its partners launched fund-raising to assist drought-stricken Somalia
2023-02-09
The United Nations, Somalia's humanitarian partners and the Somali government jointly released the 2023 Somalia humanitarian emergency plan on the 8th, calling on the international community to donate 2.6 billion dollars to assist about 7.6 million people affected by the drought in the country. According to the information released on the United Nations website, Somalia is currently experiencing the longest and most severe drought in its history due to insufficient rainfall in five consecutive rainy seasons. At present, the drought has displaced more than 1.4 million people and killed about 3.5 million livestock. If the humanitarian assistance cannot be sustained, famine is likely to occur from April to June this year and after, when the rainfall is still insufficient. According to the United Nations statistics, there are currently about 8 million people in Somalia without access to safe drinking water and health services. At the same time, cholera and measles cases have surged, and the number of people suffering from severe malnutrition has also increased. In addition, conflicts and instability have increased the demand for humanitarian assistance, and also hindered the implementation of humanitarian assistance operations. (Xinhua News Agency)
