World Meteorological Organization: The past eight years have been the warmest since the world recorded
2023-01-13
The World Meteorological Organization released a communique on the 12th that, driven by the rising concentration of greenhouse gases and accumulated heat, the past eight years have been the warmest since the world recorded, and global long-term warming is still continuing. According to the data of six major international temperature data sets integrated by the World Meteorological Organization, the global average temperature in 2022 is about 1.15 degrees Celsius higher than the pre-industrial level, which is the eighth consecutive year in which the global annual temperature is at least 1 degree Celsius higher than the pre-industrial level. This also means that the period from 2015 to 2022 is the warmest eight years in the world since the record, with 2016, 2019 and 2020 ranking the top three. In 2016, an unusually strong El Ni ñ o event occurred, prompting the global temperature to set a record. The World Meteorological Organization said that since the 1980s, every decade has been warmer than the previous decade. It is expected that this situation will continue, and the possibility of the increase of the global average temperature in the future will briefly exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius compared with the pre-industrial level is increasing. According to the Paris Agreement reached in 2015, all parties will strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change, control the increase of global average temperature within 2 degrees Celsius from the pre-industrial level, and work hard to control the temperature rise within 1.5 degrees Celsius. The World Meteorological Organization pointed out that the extreme heat wave, drought and devastating floods in 2022 affected millions of people around the world and caused billions of dollars of economic losses. People need to strengthen their preparedness for such extreme events, including improving the level of meteorological observation and early warning services. (Xinhua News Agency)
