The Chinese representative calls for continued promotion of the implementation of the Colombian peace agreement
2023-01-12
On the 11th, Dai Bing, the Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, spoke at the open meeting of the Security Council on the issue of Colombia, calling for the continued promotion of the comprehensive implementation of the Colombian peace agreement. Dai Bing said that in the past year, the Colombian people have made remarkable progress in political dialogue and national construction through joint efforts, and have written a new chapter of peace, development, and reconciliation. The international community should continue to provide necessary support to the peace process in Colombia and promote the achievement of more positive results. Firstly, we must continue to promote the comprehensive implementation of the peace agreement. The efforts of the new government led by President Petro and relevant parties to actively implement the provisions of the peace agreement are highly commendable. At the same time, it must also be noted that the implementation of peace agreements is a long-term systematic project, and all parties in Colombia need to make continuous efforts towards comprehensive implementation. The international community should also continue to closely monitor and provide political support. Secondly, we must persist in resolving differences through dialogue and negotiation. Colombia ended the conflict through dialogue and rebuilt peace through negotiations, serving as a model for political resolution of disputes. We hope that Colombia will continue to make unremitting efforts in the correct direction of dialogue and consultation, and we look forward to all parties reaching a permanent ceasefire and political solution through negotiations. Thirdly, we must attach great importance to promoting lasting peace through sustainable development. Achieving inclusive development for all is the fundamental way to eliminate the root causes of conflicts. The Chinese side appreciates the government's emphasis on the governance philosophy of "promoting peace through development", and hopes that the United Nations and international partners can strengthen coordination and form a joint force to provide more support for the development of the economy and improvement of people's livelihoods in Colombia. Fourthly, we need to continuously improve the security situation. Currently, the security situation in some areas of Colombia is still unstable, and armed groups are still active in former conflict areas and remote areas. The Chinese side supports the Colombian government in strengthening its deployment in areas with relatively weak national security, welcomes the Colombian side to formulate targeted policies on disarming armed groups and violent organizations, and take effective measures to protect civilians, especially women, children, and residents of African descent.
