French media: Canada purchased an American-made air defense system and sent it to Ukraine
2023-01-12
According to Agence France-Presse, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau announced on the 10th that he had purchased an air defense system from the United States and then provided it to Ukraine. Ottawa announced that this would be the first set of "National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System" (NASAMS) provided by Canada to Ukraine. This news was announced after Trudeau and Biden met in Mexico. According to the report, this air defense system will be mainly used to help Ukraine resist large-scale Russian air strikes. After meeting with the Ukrainian defense minister, Canadian Defense Minister Anand explained: "This is the first priority. That is why Canada purchased air defense systems for Ukraine." Ukrainian President Zelensky welcomed the move. He tweeted: "Thank you for helping us protect our airspace. The NASAMS that Canada will acquire and give us will be a solid barrier to protect us."
