Japanese media: The US military will create a "Coastal Regiment" in Okinawa
2023-01-12
According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan, on January 10, the US government decided to reorganize the Marine Corps stationed in Okinawa Prefecture by 2025 to create a coastal regiment to deal with problems on the island, and has informed the Japanese government of this plan. The Japan-US Security Agreement Committee ("2+2"), which was held in Washington on the 11th, will coordinate in the direction of creating a coastal group. According to the report, several Japanese and American government officials confirmed the news. Since the 2000's, when anti-terrorism operations such as the Afghan War were officially launched, the US Marine Corps has strengthened its heavy weapon forces such as tanks and artillery to prepare for large-scale ground operations. However, in view of China's intensified military activities in the East China Sea and the South China Sea in recent years, the United States is stepping up efforts to build a mechanism capable of responding to island operations. As a mobile force at the core of the mechanism, the Coastal Regiment will be equipped with long-range anti-ship missiles and air defense capabilities. The US Marine Corps plans to create three coastal groups, one of which was established in Hawaii last March. At the "2+2" meeting held by the Foreign Ministers and Defense Ministers of Japan and the United States, the United States will announce that one of the remaining two coastal missions will be deployed in Okinawa. It can be considered that Japan will support it. The other is likely to be deployed in Guam, the United States. It is envisaged that when something happens, the coastal regiment will stay in the frontline islands within the enemy's sphere of influence to fight. To be specific, small forces are dispersed to carry out activities in various outlying islands to avoid the attack from the enemy while preventing the entry of enemy ships and aircraft to ensure the right to dominate the sea. It is reported that the southwest islands of Japan and the surrounding areas of Taiwan are within the range of Chinese military missiles. How the front-line troops prevent the invasion of the other side is the key before additional combat power can be invested. The coastal regiment is expected to play a core role. In the future, the United States will equip the existing forces stationed in Okinawa with new anti-ship missile capabilities, while reducing heavy weapons and transforming them into coastal groups. The size of the troops is estimated to be about 2000, roughly the same as Hawaii. It is expected that there will be no change in the US military integration plan for the deployment of about 10000 Marines in Okinawa. The Japanese Land Self-Defense Force also decided to upgrade the 15th Brigade (about 2200 people) in Naha City to a division of about 3000 people, and strengthen the defense of the southwest islands. If the Coastal Corps is established, it will be possible to further deepen cooperation between Japan and the United States through joint exercises. (Outlook New Era)
