American media: Egypt purchases improved "Chinook" helicopters
2023-01-06
According to a report on the website of the US Defense News Weekly on January 3, Boeing announced on the 3rd that the US Army and Boeing signed a contract worth 426 million dollars to produce 12 CH-47F Chinook helicopters for the Egyptian Air Force. Previously, the US State Department approved the foreign military sales on May 26, allowing Egypt to purchase 23 CH-47F helicopters and related military equipment at a price of 2.6 billion US dollars. Boeing spokesman told reporters that as part of this potential arms sale, this is the first contract of the transaction, and Egypt can choose to buy 11 CH-47F helicopters. Ken Ilander, vice president of Boeing, said in a statement that Egypt intended to replace its CH-47D helicopter with a CH-47F helicopter, which would "enhance the capability of Egypt's Chinook helicopter and effectively help it complete its heavy transport target". In a briefing to Congress, the US Defense and Security Cooperation Agency said that as a major non NATO ally of the United States, the arms sale would help improve Egypt's security situation. It is reported that the preliminary delivery will start in 2026. (Outlook New Times)
