Come to see you through 190 million years of "dinosaurs" -- a record of large-scale rescue and excavation of dinosaur fossils in Yunnan
2023-01-04
Recently, a pile of dinosaur bone fossils was "freshly baked" on a steep barren slope in Dinosaur Mountain Town, Lufeng City, Chuxiong Prefecture, Yunnan Province. On the platform only 3 meters wide, dinosaur fossils of all sizes were lying in the red soil with their teeth intertwined. One of them was a thick femur and an oval abdominal rib, like a huge palm leaf fan, which was clearly recognizable. "There are three dinosaur fossils, large, small and medium, belonging to the sauropod dinosaur of the Early Jurassic, which is about 190 million years old and walks on two legs. Dinosaur fossils are so concentrated that they are rare in the world. Three dinosaurs were unearthed at one time on the New Year's Day, which is also a New Year gift for dinosaur researchers and dinosaur enthusiasts." You Hailu, a researcher at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, told the reporter. It drizzled for several days. The excavation team set up a plastic shed at the excavation site. You Hailu and four team members dug up the wet soil, carefully took out pieces of dinosaur fossils of different sizes, and fixed them with glue and plaster. "After the fossils are exposed, they should be treated against the wind. A sketch map of the fossils should be drawn on the site, and first-hand research data should be retained. During the excavation process, we will fix and pack the fossils, and transport the fossil packages to the Lufeng Dinosaur Fossil Science Popularization Education Base warehouse for storage, which will be repaired, studied, and mounted in the future." You Hailu introduced how to organize the stones. "Except for the weathered skull fossils, the other bones of the three dinosaurs are relatively complete. One dinosaur is about 7 to 8 meters long, one about 5 meters long, and one about 4 meters long. Judging from the shape of the three dinosaur bone fossils crowded together, the three dinosaurs may have lived in groups and died suddenly." Wang Tao, a member of the excavation team and director of the Lufeng Dinosaur Fossil Protection and Research Center, said. You Hailu, a researcher at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, excavated newly discovered dinosaur fossils in Lufeng, Yunnan Province. Dong Qixing, Wang Tao's colleague, and Zhao Ranchen and Chen Liurunxuan, two graduate students majoring in paleontology at Kunming University of Science and Technology, went up the mountain to excavate together every day. As the backup of the excavation team, there are many experts and scholars, including Wang Qiang, a dinosaur egg research expert, Feng Wenqing, the Technical Office of the Institute of Paleovertebrae, Wang Yaming, the China Geological Museum, Zhang Yinan, the Beijing Natural Museum, Ren Xinxin, the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, and Guoguo Fu, the Paleontological Fossil Research Center of Chuxiong Prefecture. How were these three dinosaurs discovered after 190 million years of sleep? On June 17, 2022, when Kunming Natural Resources Comprehensive Investigation Center was surveying on a barren mountain 30 kilometers away from Lufeng County seat, Assistant Engineer Zhao Jianbo suddenly found a stone exposed in the sand on a steep slope, which was suspected to be a dinosaur leg bone fossil. He immediately contacted Wang Tao to check on the spot. Wang Tao soon determined that it was a dinosaur leg bone fossil, and three dinosaurs saw the light again. On December 28, 2022, the Department of Natural Resources of Yunnan Province announced in the Dinosaur Valley of Lufeng City that the rescue excavation and protection of dinosaur fossils found in Chuxiong Prefecture in recent years would be carried out by the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. There are 9 dinosaur fossil sites to be excavated this time, including 1 Dinosaur Mountain Town in Lufeng City, 2 Wande Town in Wuding County, and 6 towns in Dazhuang, Damaidi and Anlongbao of Shuangbai County
